China has surpassed the US to become the country with the most internet users.
BDA China reports that as of February 2008, China had over 220 million people on the internet, with that number soaring to 233 million by March. The US hosts 216 million internet users.
China seems set to consolidate its global position, despite complaints of human rights violations and widespread internet censorship in the country. China's population numbers 1.3 billion people, just 17 per cent of which have access to the internet.
BDA China's chairman, Duncan Clark notes that the Chinese government: "Continues to filter the internet and encourage self-censorship, it also has a mandate to promote cheaper technology and the knowledge economy."
