Canon i-Sensys MF8050cn
- Manufacturer: Canon (http://www.canon.co.uk)
- Pros: Compact device; well built and well specified; easy to use; toner affordably priced
- Cons: Slow; tiny paper tray; average print quality
- Price: £346.50 (ex VAT)
- Star rating:
Canon has managed to produce a very well specified printer within a very small package. The i-Sensys 8050cn has print, copy, scan and fax capability. There’s an automatic document feeder and it’s network ready. The design is up to the quality you’d expect from the Canon name.
Due to its small size the paper tray holds only 150 sheets of paper, which is poor for a device aimed at offices. This is made more annoying by the lack of an optional, extra paper tray to bump up the capacity. There is a manual document feeder for envelopes and the like on the front of the machine.
Using the Canon is a fairly straightforward affair and the instructions are easy to follow. The keypad could look a bit daunting at first, but you’ll soon find it’s simple to use.
In terms of speed, the Canon was a bit middle of the road. It was neither terrible nor massively impressive. Six seconds for a single page of text isn’t bad, but against this competition it was in the middle of the bunch. Ten pages of text took 50 seconds and that was second to last.
Print quality was a mixture of excellent and acceptable. Plain text was really sharp and deep black, with constant quality across a variety of point sizes. Colour prints were a bit less impressive. Bright reds were a bit more orange and lacked punch, but otherwise colours were fairly accurate. Colour copies were outstanding with both colour and mono prints detailed and finely reproduced.
The toners for the MF8050cn are keenly priced at about £70 each and give 1,500 pages from each colour and 2,300 pages from the black. So it’ll cost about £280 to refill per 6,800 pages. Naturally, your usage will vary from the standard tests, so you may get more or less than these figures suggest.
The Canon offers a lot for the money (and can be found for even less online), but it is slow and colour prints were a bit flat overall. The design is good, and it’s well built and easy to use. However, it’s not an overly strong showing.
