Dell 2155cdn
- Manufacturer: Dell (www.dell.co.uk)
- Pros: Very fast; good print quality; well specified; option for wireless networking (costs extra)
- Cons: A bit loud in operation; basic toners have small capacity
- Price: £479 ex VAT
- Star rating:
Dell might not be the first name that springs to mind when it comes to printers, especially if you’re a Mac user. However, the company has recently expanded its range and is making real headway in the printer market. Dell is quite open that it’s using other manufacturers parts, but design, firmware and software is all its own.
The Dell 255cdn is well specified too, with print, copy, scan and fax joined by wired networking and duplex capability as standard. You can also make the Dell wireless as an optional extra.
The 2155cdn is an all-black affair, and although this gives a somewhat monolithic look and feel, it’s a good decision for an office machine. Often the beige or cream finishes used by many manufacturers end up looking grubby after a few months’ hard work. The Dell will never suffer that fate. Having said that, the 2155cdn is not pretty, so if you’re after something to complement your iMacs and MacBooks, the Dell most certainly isn’t it.
Speeds are good from the 2155cdn. It chugged through our 10-page business document in a very speedy 29 seconds. In duplex mode the same 10 pages were output in just 41 seconds: impressive considering the acrobatics each sheet of paper has to go through. A page of plain text was ready in just four seconds. Copies took 20 seconds whether colour or mono.
Quality and constancy on colour pages was excellent too. Black text over colour backgrounds was well rendered, and the same shade was replicated well throughout a document. Plain pages of text were similarly sharp and impressive. Copies were good but did have some banding and loss of detail.
The standard toner configuration gives 1,200 pages per cartridge and a full set will cost about £250. There are higher capacity options available.
Overall, the Dell is an impressive machine. It’s fast and gives great results across the range of tasks it performs. Our only real criticism of it is that it’s a bit loud in operation, but that’s hardly a deal breaker.
