Press Release - Tesco Direct research - Manic Monday goes mobile as Brits use smartphones to shop
Mon, 29 Nov 2010
MANIC MONDAY GOES MOBILE AS BRITS USE SMARTPHONES TO SHOP
As Britain’s busiest day for online shopping arrives, Tesco Direct prepares itself for an influx of online orders through smartphones this Christmas
November 29th – One in ten Brits will do their online Christmas shopping using their mobile phone rather than a computer this year, according to new research findings from Tesco Direct. The trend of using mobile phones for online shopping emerged in a study of 4,000 consumers. This comes as Tesco Direct gets ready to face its busiest online shopping day of the year, dubbed ‘Cyber Monday’ or ‘Manic Monday’ by retailers.
Busy work schedules and hectic lives will see millions of savvy bargain-hunters use their smartphone to find the latest deals for Christmas presents, the research shows. Nearly half will shop online using their phones while watching TV, one in six expect to buy something on their phone while sat on the bus and a quarter will log on to shopping sites through their mobiles during their daily commute.
The study was commissioned to examine the changing Christmas shopping habits of the nation following the launch of Tesco Direct’s new mobile web service, designed to facilitate easy shopping for customers directly through their phones.
Ian Crook, CMO for tesco.com comments: “Tesco Direct is expecting to ship more than 80,000 items today as we face our busiest day of the year for online orders. For the first time this year we anticipate a significant amount of these orders to be placed by customers using their mobile phones, because customers like the convenience of shopping on the go.”
The nationwide poll found 78 per cent are planning to do some of their Christmas shopping online this year and seven in ten think it’s the best way to buy presents. More than a third (36 per cent) said using their mobile would reduce stress levels and mean they could fit shopping in and around their busy lives.
Ian Crook continues: “In October alone, we had over half a million people visit the Tesco Direct website using their mobile phones and in the run up to Christmas we’re expecting this number to surge as people order their gifts from Tesco Direct. Our new mobile web service makes it easier for our customers to search for and buy presents at competitive prices and as our research shows it has potential to take away some of the stress of shopping.”
Simply avoiding the Christmas crowds was the biggest reason for turning to the internet, with 71 per cent saying they can't stand battling queues in the shops. Another 44 per cent like to use the web to search for the best price.

Lego Star Wars Imperial Star Destroyer
Kung Zhu Hamsters
The research also found that:
In the lead up to Christmas, 73 per cent are worried about the escalating cost of it all as they face tight budgets
Six in ten don’t know what to buy people
Half are stressed around Christmas
Nearly half (45 per cent) said they struggle fitting present shopping in around their job and family commitments
Seven per cent admitted to online shopping it when they should be working, and one in ten will hit the online shops during their lunch hours
Two thirds polled said they typically leave their shopping to the last minute
Online shopping saves the average Brit six hours of traipsing around the high street
The Tesco Direct mobile website was launched earlier this month to make it easier for people to shop online using smartphones. It features simple-to-explore product categories, which are easily navigated through a series of expandable tabs. It allows customers to:
Sign into /register for a Tesco Direct account
Search through the complete Tesco Direct product range
Read all the product features
Add products to the shopping basket
Explore delivery options and book a delivery slot
Locate the closest store
Read buying guides and product warranties
Look at product warranties
Add or remove products from an existing order
Check out and complete the order
To use the Tesco Direct mobile website, visit www.direct.tesco.com from any mobile phone that can access the internet.
The last Christmas delivery date for Tesco Direct is 22 December. The last day for large Tesco Direct orders guaranteed to be delivered before Christmas is 16 December by 12 noon (for items like white goods or furniture).

Press Release - TV legend and science whiz Johnny Ball presents Web without Worries
Fri, 26 Nov 2010
TV legend and science whiz Johnny Ball presents ‘Web without Worries’
BitDefender releases video series online to highlight perils & pitfalls
of internet crime with top tips for safer surfing for all
Johnny Ball, the celebrated children’s television presenter during the 1970s and 1980s and science and mathematics enthusiast, is now starring in a series of YouTube videos called ‘Web without Worries.’ In collaboration with BitDefender®, Johnny aims to make the internet a safer place for all by breaking down computer jargon and demystifying often misunderstood terms such as Trojans, Phishing and Zombies.
BitDefender, an award winning provider of innovative internet security solutions, has launched four short videos that are available on YouTube and the BitDefender site. Each video contains a concise explanation in simple language of the main concepts that lie behind online crime and how to spot them. While the rise in cybercrime has been well documented, Johnny provides useful advice to internet users on how to avoid falling victim to cyber gangs.
Johnny Ball’s shows were renowned for presenting scientific and technical information in an entertaining and accessible way and he continues to be recognised for his ability to bring clarity to the obscure. In these latest online safety videos, Johnny uses his popular style of presenting to explore the type of threats web users are faced with in the 21st century and stresses the importance of having the tools and knowledge to deal with such threats.
“The idea behind creating these videos in conjunction with BitDefender is to make internet security more accessible and understandable for all,” said Johnny Ball. “Being online in the comfort of your home may lead to individuals feeling secure, however criminal gangs lurk around every corner aiming to steal and commit fraud. Hopefully, the explanations will help people to understand what to look for and the tips will help them avoid becoming easy prey.”
“While the Government identifies the threat of cyber attacks as a future focus for national security, we are committed to ensuring that the individual is protected from online crime now,” said Simon Geach, Sales Director, BitDefender UK & Ireland. “The person on the street will probably not understand what a Zombie or a Phishing Attack is, but they are very real threats in today’s web connected society. We hope that our videos with Johnny Ball will help people understand security threats and benefit from a safer online environment.”
Watch Johnny Ball’s latest security tips on the BitDefender website. For a full list of BitDefender 2011 features and benefits by product, please visit www.bitdefender.co.uk or follow BitDefender on Twitter for daily security alerts.

Press Release - Tesco Phone Shop to give up to £250 in Tesco vouchers with mobile contracts
Thu, 25 Nov 2010
Tesco Phone Shop to give up to £250 in Tesco vouchers with mobile contracts
LONDON, November 25th 2010, Tesco Phone Shop is getting into the festive spirit and taking the chill out of Christmas shopping by offering customers a gift card worth up to £250 on selected new mobile phone contracts purchased between November 1st and December 31st 2010.
This unique offer means that as well as picking up a great value, top-of-the-range handset and contract from Tesco, customers will also be able to get some of their Christmas groceries or gifts from Tesco, absolutely free.
Lance Batchelor, Chief Executive Officer of Tesco Telecoms and Tesco Mobile commented:
“We want to provide a different type of offer for mobile phone consumers.
“Rather than giving away telecoms gadgets and suchlike, we have decided to make Christmas shopping more simple. So we’re giving away up to £250 for customers to spend on anything they like in Tesco stores or online.
“Along with a new mobile phone, customers could pick up gifts for the whole family, such as toys, bikes, DVD players or even the whole Christmas dinner, with all the trimmings.”
To take advantage of this offer, customers can pop into their nearest Tesco Phone Shop and speak to friendly, trained staff who will be able to advise them on the best handset and contracts that suit them. Customers can also visit www.tescophoneshop.com to take up this offer.
Some of the top deals are:
· A free £250 gift card when customers sign up for a Sony Ericsson Cedar and Samsung S3100
· A free £200 gift card with a contract for the great-looking Samsung Europa and Samsung Wave Scotia mobiles (new in range)
· A free £150 gift card with a brand new, easy-to-use Nokia 6303i
· A free £100 gift card – with a BlackBerry 8520. Perfect for email on the move
Unlike some other deals on the market, Tesco’s offer is unconditional. If a contract is set up before Friday 10th December, a gift card will be sent before Christmas – in time for all those last minute Christmas purchases.
ENDS
Offer is from 1st November to 31st December
If a contract is signed after Friday 10th December, the gift card will be issued in the new year, in time to wipe away the January blues
No set gift purchase, customers are able to purchase food or non-food items for Christmas

SciVisum launches iPhone monitoring app with Tesco as first customer
Tesco ensures its new iPhone grocery app performs with SciVisum
Canterbury, UK – 11 November 2010: SciVisum (www.scivisum.co.uk), a leader in dynamic website monitoring, has launched the iPhone Application Monitor, the first monitoring solution for iPhone apps, with Tesco as its first customer. Tesco is using SciVisum’s new tool to ensure the best performance for its customers from its latest iPhone grocery app and shopping portal.
The app was launched on 10 September 2010 and already has over 300,000 users.
Matthew Briggs, Service Manager at Tesco.com says, “Customers are using our new iPhone app to check and amend their orders. In just a few weeks it has become a valuable addition to our business and the customer’s shopping experience.
“SciVisum responded quickly to the iPhone app launch and developed the new mobile service to replicate and monitor how the iPhone app performs for our customers. We can test the multiple journeys that customers take through the grocery site to ensure it is working effectively for them. An alert is sent if any aspect of the app or website is not working.”
Agnes Gough, Sales and Marketing Director at SciVisum adds, “The new iPhone app service is a great addition to our product range. By measuring Tesco’s customer experience of the performance, availability and consistency of journeys across their websites, we can ensure that any system errors are identified and Tesco can rectify them before the customer experience is directly impacted.”
In addition to the iPhone monitoring services, SciVisum’s dynamic user approach is used across Tesco’s main grocery website, Tesco Direct, wine sites, entertainment and clothing sites, the Republic of Ireland site, Telecoms, Tesco Compare, Travel, Books as well as the Baby & Toddler Club.
Matt concludes, “It is important that all of our websites deliver an excellent customer experience. Our IT operations centre monitors over 40 user journeys across the websites through SciVisum and these are tested every few minutes.

SHAZAM AVAILABLE ON GETJAR
GetJar is the First Cross-Platform Independent App Store Where the Shazam App is Distributed
London, UK – 9th November 2010, Shazam®, the leading mobile discovery provider has made its popular App available on GetJar, the largest multi-handset application store with over one billion downloads to date.
Shazam’s launch on GetJar marks the first time the company has made its App available on an independent App store.
The free Shazam App has proved to be a popular choice with Symbian, Android, BlackBerry and Windows phone users on GetJar. Shazam’s ability to attract music lovers to the site has led to GetJar including Shazam as one of five key Apps to appear in its first movie theatre advertising campaign, due to launch in U.S. theatres in November 2010.
“GetJar has quickly grown to become a trusted source for mobile App downloads and we are very pleased with the speed at which Shazam has become one of the most popular Apps on GetJar,” said Andrew Fisher, CEO of Shazam. “Driving App discovery is essential in this marketplace, where choice can be overwhelming, so we’re looking forward to seeing how GetJar’s advertising initiative impacts the level of interest and downloads from consumers.”
“People come to GetJar to get the best range and quality of Apps - across all major platforms and phones for over 200 countries,” said Ilja Laurs, CEO, GetJar. “Shazam is one of the most distinctive and highly-rated Apps on GetJar, so we were keen to highlight its availability on GetJar in our first movie advertising campaign.

Jonny Evans - Patent says Apple's Lion boasts scrollable menus
Mon, 08 Nov 2010
There's been some talk on Lion's new user interfaces and the removal of active indicators to show active applications in the Dock. Does this mean the Dock itself is set for change? A recent Apple patent suggests change may be on its way.
A new European patent filing has emerged which describes an all-new system of "scrollable menus and toolbars." As described the feature is something that's set for both iOS and Mac OS devices, and represents another step away from hierarchical computer menus.

Press Release - Free-app-acino for Birmingham coffee lovers
Wed, 03 Nov 2010
Free-app-acino for Birmingham coffee lovers
Urban Coffee Company, an independent coffee shop located in the heart of Birmingham’s business district, has launched the UK’s first iPhone app which allows customers to pre-order their drinks so they are ready when they arrive.
The app will allow customers to spend more time enjoying their coffee and less time queuing for it. Busy professionals from the surrounding Colmore Row area can order a round of coffees for the whole office and have it ready to take away with a much-reduced waiting time.
Simon Jenner, founder of Urban Coffee Company, said: “It’s no secret that making a fantastic cup of coffee takes time – we brew our speciality filter coffees freshly for each cup, which means a short wait is inevitable. We found that more and more customers started calling the store to pre-order their drinks – especially for large or complicated orders – so we decided to devise an online ordering facility to speed the process up.
“Our customers are a tech savvy bunch, and from day one we’ve used social media such as Twitter to communicate with them. With that in mind, creating an iPhone app seemed like a logical step to take. We believe this is the first coffee ordering app in the UK as apps available from other coffee shops concentrate on explaining menus, translating ‘barrista speak’ and locating stores rather than simply being able to order a coffee before you get there.
“We’re very proud to be the first company to successfully implement this type of application in the UK – beating off the big boys like Starbucks and Caffè Nero. We’ve always recognised that innovation is a tool which will allow us to punch above our weight, which is essential for a small and entrepreneurial store like ourselves.
The application was developed by Birmingham-based open source software developer Scott James Remnant, himself a regular Urban Coffee Company customer. Scott said: “From the start, Urban has been used by people working in the digital and creative industries to meet offline to bounce ideas together – we’re all made to feel part of the family. Because of that collaborative spirit, I volunteered to build the iPhone app free of charge as a way to offer a little something back. It’s great to see customers now embracing it and using it daily to place orders.”
Since making the app available via the iTunes store just three weeks ago, 200 users have already downloaded it and over 100 orders have been placed via the app.
Neil Rasga, a regular Urban Coffee customer and local web developer/blogger, commented: “Everyone has those days at the office when you’re flagging at your desk, desperate for a five minute window where you can escape for a quick caffeine fix before returning to the rush of it all. At those times, the last thing you want to contend with is a queue – you just want to grab your coffee and go. I’ve used the new Urban Coffee app myself and have to say it works just as it’s supposed to; that’s acid test for any iPhone app.
“Too many companies develop pointless applications that don’t add anything to the experience of a brand, mainly because there’s a misguided belief that everyone needs to be doing ‘something digital’ these days. It’s pleasing that Urban Coffee seems to have taken a sensible approach – identifying a real issue and implementing a solution which actually offers something useful to its customers.”
Urban Coffee Company is renowned not only for its drinks, but also as a social hub which hosts a diverse range of groups and activities – including a book club, a blogger linkup session, live music, muffin Mondays and even a knitting circle.
The second of Urban Coffee Company’s outlets is due to open in December this year, based in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.
Urban Coffee Company’s iPhone application is now available to download from the iTunes store. For further information, log onto www.urbancoffee.co.uk or call 0121 236 0207.

UK Parents Speak Out: Touch-Typing Viewed as Essential to their Children’s Development
Microsoft survey delves into parental beliefs about their children’s computer capabilities
London – 02 November 2010 – Research commissioned by Microsoft has revealed that an overwhelming number of UK parents believe that touch-typing is an essential skill for children. 95% of parents sampled in the survey[1], stated that touch-typing and learning to use a computer are both extremely important to their teenagers educational development.
With youngsters becoming ever more computer-savvy at increasingly younger ages, it’s not surprising that many parents rate computer ability so highly. When asked which life skills parents felt were of comparable importance to touch-typing, 52% answered ‘learning to read’ and 56% thought it was as important as ‘learning to drive a car’, whilst 44% of parents believed that it was as important as learning to cook.
Commenting on the findings, Kairen Cullen CPsychol.AFBPsS, Chartered Psychologist (Educational) said, "Computer use, supported by key adults such as teachers and parents, can have many positive effects on learning and development. Particular benefits include improved concentration and engagement, fine motor co-ordination, speed of response, learning new skills and problem-solving.
