Thu, 22 Apr 2010

Billy Kimball wrote up some of the “Least Common Complains about the new iPad” for The New Yorker. Unlike complaints about Wi-Fi woes false advertising, or the missing camera, Billy’s complaints skew a bit (intentionally) funnier:

“Too salty.”

Apple partly to blame for how its iPhone prototype was lost and how it handled its recovery

Wed, 21 Apr 2010

It appears the saga of the lost (or stolen) iPhone prototype is drawing to a close. Tech blog Gizmodo, which paid $5000 for an unreleased, next-gen iPhone and then posted a detailed preview of the handset, now reports it has returned the device to Apple.

Since Cupertino's legal sharks requested in writing that Gizmodo return the iPhone, there's little doubt the handset is the real deal.

Why I'm dropping Google

Thu, 15 Apr 2010

For a company whose unofficial slogan is “Don’t Be Evil,” Google has been ignoring its so-called core value with alarming frequency of late. And because of that, I decided to delete my Gmail account, along with all other Google services that I am able to do without. I have also deleted as much personal information as possible from my Google profile.

I still need to use some Google services – I have clients who share documents via Google Docs, I need to access one private blog on Blogger, and I will continue to use Google search (though I plan on exploring alternatives, such as Bing and Yahoo). But for the most part, I’m dropping Google wherever I can.

Apple's culture of secrecy is killing it

Fri, 09 Apr 2010

I’ve just seen a TV piece about The Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Like the Rolling Stones, it seems to be (a) on a permanent tour of North America and Asia, and (b) composed of members who are indestructible.

Unlike the Stones – who are skeletal and wee, sized for convenient packing and transport – the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is distressingly huge. It’s composed of a huge cloud of dispersed plastic, which, we can only assume, can’t be having a positive effect on the environment.

1. The box
Surprisingly minimal even by Apple's standards. The box is plain white with a picture of the iPad on the front.

KentLyons, Macmillan Cancer Support and the April Fool’s Day Ruse

Thu, 01 Apr 2010

As someone who read newspapers professionally for eleven years, one of the annual highlights of a lowlight job working nights was checking the papers each 1 April. A time before the Internet, and barely a computer in the office, you'd often have to wait until the second editions to discover fact from fiction, although between us we managed to spot most of them.

These days the clues are more obvious and we even receive press releases to let us all know they are out there, floating around the Internet, hoping to attract a crowd. Here's one that caught my eye, especially as it is for a good cause.

Apple doesn't have a good answer for deteriorating and not-that-old iPhone batteries

Thu, 01 Apr 2010

When your iPhone battery blows after hundreds of charge cycles, Apple doesn't have very good options to fix it. And rest assured your iPhone will need a battery replacement, most likely within two years.

It's amazing how fast an iPhone battery deteriorates, typically ending up on death row in 18 months or less. Every time you go through a charge cycle, for instance, you'll permanently lose anywhere from 30 seconds to a minute of battery capacity.
