Jonny Evans - iPad gets Flash as Apple says 2 million iPads sold

Mon, 31 May 2010

Apple today announced its achievement of over two million iPad sales in just 60-days -- confirming demand is off the charts -- as pioneering work from one ad agency and developer, Chris Smoak means you can look forward to Flash on your iPad.

Adobe Flash and Apple sure have been hot topics this month. Apple's refusal to support Flash on its family of iPhone-powered products has seen the Department of Justice begin an investigation into Apple on Adobe's request.

Jonny Evans - iPhone 3GS in short supply as WWDC looms...

Fri, 28 May 2010

There's a few days to go until Apple's annual WWDC event in San Francisco, and it looks more likely than ever the company will use the event to introduce the iPhone 4HD and to reveal more of its wider product strategy.

Earlier this week we learned that the iPhone 3G has been removed from sale with WalMart now offering the iPhone 3GS at $97 with a two year contract instead of the iPhone 3G which previously filled that price point.

Jonny Evans - Apple makes iPhone dev deal -- with Microsoft?

Thu, 27 May 2010

A report this morning claims Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer will share the spotlight with Apple CEO Steve Jobs at Apple's forthcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) -- to announce a joint move on iPhone development...

On the principle that the enemy of my enemy is my friend, Apple has invited Microsoft to develop tools PC users can employ to build approved iPhone applications.

Going Mobile

Thu, 27 May 2010

The easiest way to stump me is to ask me what MobileMe is and whether it’s worth the $99 (£59 in the UK) annual fee. I usually respond by doing a ‘teardown’ of MobileMe’s features, in the same way that a new iDevice gets disassembled by analysts to work out how much each component part costs.

I’d pay ten bucks a year for the Find My iPhone feature, easily. I’d pay twenty bucks or so for a service that keeps all of my various address books, calendars, keychains, and system settings constantly synced and backed up.

Jonny Evans - iPad Xmas? Apple's iPad seizes netbook hearts

Wed, 26 May 2010

Yet more evidence that iPad is taking huge big Pacman-sized bites out of the netbook market comes in a recent survey suggesting the Apple product has already had a huge impact on consumers purchasing plans -- with millions of iPads flying out of Apple's hands.

As I pointed out earlier this month, Wall Street analyst Katy Huberty of Morgan Stanley observed iPad sales to be destroying netbook sales.

Jonny Evans - Why Apple is right about Flash on smartphones

Tue, 25 May 2010

Apple's lack of support for Adobe Flash has generated thousands of column inches online and in print.

There's been harsh words between Adobe's founders and Apple CEO, Steve Jobs. We've seen huge ads appear in key publications as Adobe spends cold hard cash to counter Apple's criticism of its fading multimedia star, Flash.

Jonny Evans - Google opens up on AdSense splits as Apple war gets personal

Mon, 24 May 2010

Google today at last revealed the revenue splits it applies on AdSense -- a move the company has faced (and fielded) plenty of pressure to confirm in the past.

The revenue split for AdSense for Publishers is 68:32, Google said, adding that the split for AdSense for search stands at 51:49. In both cases the larger figure goes to the publishers.

Creative Profiles: Isobella Jade - Model, Author, Apple Store freeloader

Sat, 22 May 2010

Writing for Macworld can have its perks, a chance to preview and test new software and hardware, meet lovely PR people and enjoy the odd sandwich or three at press lunches...sorry launches. Amongst the packages heading our way recently was a rather wonderful double bill from model and author Isobella Jade - a copy of her novel Almost 5'4" and graphic novel Model Life.

Almost 5'4", recently published in the UK by The Friday Project/HarperCollins, is a very readable, very revealing memoir that feels at times like you are peeking at someone's secret diary. It's possibly the only book ever to have been written entirely on the free Mac computers at a New York Apple Store. Part memoir, part inspirational guide, Almost 5'4" would make a good film, and likely the rather persuasive Isobella Jade would insist on playing the lead. Model Life: The Journey of a Pint-Size Fashion Warrior, meanwhile, continues the story with Jazmin Ruotolo providing playful illustrations.

Jonny Evans - On future Macs, iPad, MacBook Air and iPhone

Fri, 21 May 2010

Apple's got more planned than even Google can imitate.

Despite the mass hysteria greeting Google's swathe of product introductions this week, Apple's seeming silence isn't a giant groaning, but the sign of a competitor drawing its breath to make the next move.

Remember that alongside creating the iPhone, iPod and iPad, Apple also develops computers.

Jonny Evans - Apple iPad demand off the charts, and rising, surveys claim

Thu, 20 May 2010

As Google lays the smack down against Apple at day two of its I/O conference, a series of positive reports show us Apple's runaway success with the iPad.

Jonny Evans - Why Apple must respond to Google's television people

Tue, 18 May 2010

Google opens its developer conference in San Francisco this week, setting the stage for another intensification of its battle with Apple for the future of technology.

Working with partners including Intel, Logitech and Sony, Google will show developers how it hopes the future of television will be Android-powered.

The LA Times tells us the search giant will showcase technology that "TV viewers can use to navigate among familiar shows, YouTube videos and home videos on their sets." This is called SmartTV.

Jonny Evans - Apple takes on Google for the future of tech

Mon, 17 May 2010

Apple's purchase of personal assistant app developer, Siri, marks an intensification of the company's battle with former ally, Google. Apple's buying spree seems likely to intensify, too, as the company has hired a senior executive to lead its purchases.

Siri creates useful software which uses geo-location and the Internet to help users track down locally-placed entertainment and services. You can use it to find the best local bar, a taxi to get you there and what's on at the local movie theater once you get there.

There's very little difference between UK and US iPad prices

Tue, 11 May 2010

The iPad prices look higher than the prices in the US, but it should be noted that UK prices include VAT at 17.5 per cent, where tax is added to the US pricing at the time of sale.

If the US prices are converted to sterling, and compared to the UK prices before VAT there is between £22 and £40 difference.

What is an iPad app?

Thu, 06 May 2010

So the iPad has been available in the US for a few weeks now and I'm disappointed to find that one of my predictions seems to be coming true: the iPad won't truly be 'out' for another few months, when developers have had enough time with a real iPad in their hands to design true iPad apps.

Even Apple's own apps are problematic. The iPod app has only one big improvement over the iPhone edition: I can create custom playlists. But wouldn't the ability to play music wirelessly through an AirPort Express be useful? How about an Update All Podcasts button?
