Michael Gartenberg - Apple's secret weapon

Fri, 25 Jun 2010

In April, Apple launched its “magical and revolutionary” new device, the iPad. Just 28 days later, it seemed the real magic was how Apple sold more than a million devices in that time period. Less than a month later Apple announced that it had sold its two millionth iPad.

Apple’s sales record here is even more impressive if you factor in that the iPad is a complete new class of device, somewhere between the phones and computers that most consumers understand. It’s also a category of device that has vexed every vendor who has tried to enter this space over the last decade.

Jonny Evans - Quark versus Adobe as publisher to the iPad

Thu, 17 Jun 2010

The iPad is doing for publishing what the iPod did for music players -- bringing digital technology to the masses -- and Quark has a plan to take the fight to Adobe once again as both struggle for the future of publishing as we head to the clouds.

While the company won't say anything directly, it is clear that Quark believes Adobe's clear preference that its customers use its very own Flash platform for digital content and enhanced solutions for tablets and other devices is in fact a big, big chance for Quark to regain lost ground.

Jonny Evans - AT&T-botched iPhone 4 launch - an Apple nightmare

Wed, 16 Jun 2010

Apple may have sold out on its first run of pre-order-ready iPhone 4 units, and demand may be ten times higher than for any previous model, but that's no excuse for AT&T's seeming complacency.

That could be harsh, and it is only a personal opinion, but take a look:

Sure, it costs around $100 more than the last edition, but Apple's newly-introduced Mac mini gives the company another angle on its front room play -- it comes equipped with an HDMI slot -- and is available today.

This means Apple has a Mac that's designed to play nice with your HDTV -- that the company shipped the product on the same day as the iPhone 4 is being made available for pre-order internationally underlines the way it continues to experiment with convergence culture.

Just how dirty will the war between Apple and Google get? Will Google respond to Apple's iOS iAds lock-out by locking Apple's people out of YouTube?

Jonny Evans - How Apple can transform Foxconn's iPhone factories

Fri, 04 Jun 2010

The wave of suicides among workers at Apple partner Foxconn cannot be  excused by shallow comparisons of meaningless statistics -- not when a company has become as central to the public eye as Apple is today.

Jonny Evans - Google gets a little evil in iPhone v. Android

Thu, 03 Jun 2010

What would you think if your local supermarket gave the best shelf space to own-brand products chosen by itself?

What if when you went down the coffee aisle, you found loads of coffees from the supermarket, many more from its biggest competitor, but all the other coffees were made available on a shelf you had to stoop down to see?

Well, that's how I see one recent move by search giant, Google, to offer links to Android and iPhone apps at the top of its mobile search results.

Simon Jary - The Software Graveyard

Thu, 03 Jun 2010

Could you live without your iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, iWeb, etc)? How about Apple’s iTunes? Microsoft’s Office apps: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc? Adobe InDesign? God forbid, Adobe Photoshop? These programs are our daily tools – more important, dare I say it, than the operating system we use them on.

There are ready and able alternatives for the majority of the above, and mostly we take the death of a favourite software program in our stride. I suspect we’d be pretty disoriented and grieve at the loss for a while, but some might get angry and want to get even with whoever it was who took away their primary tool and skill base.

Jonny Evans - WWDC: AT&T axes unlimited deal as iPhone upgrade looms

Wed, 02 Jun 2010

AT&T has introduced new deals for future iPhone users, even as Apple CEO, Steve Jobs offered some respect to the carrier for its work so far...while declining comment on claims the partners may abandon their special relationship.

These new iPhone data deals are set to come into effect on June 7, the same day as Apple's expected introduction of a new model iPhone at WWDC next week.

Spanish carrier, Telefonica, last week dropped iPhone 3G and 3GS from its available catalog as stocks ran low, suggesting new models could be with us momentarily, though not with Flash.

Jonny Evans - Google's closing Windows kills Mac security myths

Tue, 01 Jun 2010

Despite the ongoing struggle between Apple and the search giant, Google has dumped Windows in favor of Mac and Linux systems -- underlining the inherent security weakness of a mass market OS such as Microsoft Windows.

Industry watchers have been urging larger corporate and enterprise IT shops to move away from dependence on monocultural technology infrastructure for years.
