Didn’t Apple CEO Steve Jobs recently promise that Apple was going to phase out LCD screens on its Macs in favour of more environmentally friendly LED screens, like those introduced recently on the MacBook Pro?

Just months ago Apple CEO Steve Jobs published a letter outlining his plans for the company’s green future – after being hassled by Greenpeace.

At the time he announced that he had a plan to make Macs greener, and that one of the aspects of that plan was to stop using LCDs.

"We plan to introduce our first Macs with LED backlight technology in 2007. Our ability to completely eliminate fluorescent lamps in all of our displays depends on how fast the LCD industry can transition to LED backlighting for larger displays," he wrote.

"Apple plans to reduce and eventually eliminate the use of mercury by transitioning to LED backlighting for all displays when technically and economically feasible, " he added.

So why does the new iMac have an LCD screen? Samsung’s got a 20- and 24-inch LED backlit LCD display, so they must be available.

Well he made a lot about the glass and aluminium being recyclable, so I suspect he was aware of the expectation surrounding how environmentally friendly it would be.

I'm far more disappointed with the glossy screen being forced on people. I've been waiting since last year to buy a new iMac (believing it was 'just round the corner"). Now I can't buy it because it's simply not practical, particularly for a designer using it all day. The only other desktops are the MacPro - which for me (and I'm sure plenty of others) is too expensive - and the Mac Mini, which, while updated, is still not powerful enough. It just seems mad that a glossy screened all-in-one is the only option between the Mini and the Pro.

You make a good point Karen and I agree with you, but from a nit-picking :) point of view they're both LCDs, its just the backlighting that is different ie CCFL versus LED, it's the CCFL variety that was supposed to be getting phased out.

hear hear. I hope this gets picked up on in the blogs to a sufficient extent for Mr Jobs to get the message...

Good point! And Steve should finish his job with the MacBook Proo too since the 15-inch only has a LED display. I wrote about that few weeks ago on Making Waves:

I think that these new iMacs are just a short-term product and that plans must be at an advanced stage for the sort of iMac that we can get truly excited about.

Good point that the iMac's don't feature LED backlit LCD displays - but there has been some problems with viewing angles and yellow hue with the MacBook Pro displays so I guess they are holding off until the technology matures.

But I am disappointed by your lack of understanding for display technology. As an editor of the magazine, it is quite embarrassing for you to fail to understand the technology and come out with remarks like "...plan was to stop using LCDs".
