Tue, 29 Apr 2008 Quanta profits up 18% on Apple laptop business
Apple's growing marketshare drives profits at its OEM to rise 18 per cent
Quanta Computer saw its first quarter profit shoot up 18 per cent on strength of rising Apple laptop sales.
The company is the world’s largest notebook manufacturer, an OEM which builds products for other firms, including Apple, Dell, HP and Acer. The latest financial figures from the firm reveal net income bounced from NY$3.4 billion to NT$4 billion, year-on-year.
Quanta said that deepening economic gloom had failed to impact the “strong demand for notebooks”. Globally, notebook sales are expected to climb 25 per cent this year.
“In the near term, we expect Quanta to benefit from key client Apple’s marketshare gains and we expect a strong second half,” said BNP Paribas Securities analyst Patty Liu, speaking to Bloomberg.
The analyst thinks Apple accounts for as much as 25 per cent of Quanta’s revenue. Quanta predicts notebook shipments will rise 25 per cent to reach 40 million this year.
