Confirming concerns first raised on the Macworld Forums

Confirming concerns first raised on the Macworld Forums, Apple has discontinued the 23in Cinema Display, to be replaced by the new 24in LED Cinema Display.

Macworld Forum member pp807 reported last week they feared the 23in Cinema Display's days were numbered.

“I can't see that they are available to order on the Apple store. The 20in and 30in are though. Does this mean Apple think the new 24in LED screen is to replace the 23in?

That’s all well and good, except the new LED screen won't work on anything except a new laptop.”

Apple is still selling the 20in and 30in Cinema Displays, but has put the words "Ships: Discontinued" on the 23in model.

Those desperate to purchase the discontinued 23in Cinema Display are advised to check the Apple Certified Refurbished store, Apple resellers and online market places such as Amazon and eBay.

Surely you can connect the LED screen to existing Macs with an adapter?

No, Tom. You can't. Bizarrely, Apple has only made the 24" display compatible with its new laptop range. No doubt the next refresh of the Mac Pros will sport the correct connection. It's just old-fashioned people like me, who have had their Mac Pro for a whole 9 months, who can't use the new displays. A ridiculous decision on Apple's part, as if I want/need a new mid-size Apple display I must bin my £2,000 computer and buy a new one....!!!!!

Un-effing-believable. They really need to pay more mind to the creative professional community that kept them going all those years until the consumer market got all excited.

This new display – even if it actually worked with the current Mac Pro – is in no way a suitable replacement for the 23". The old model was a SWOP certified solution with numerous colour management vendors – is this new glossy screen going to get that certification? I seriously doubt it.

Why glossy only?

I agree with Ben about it being un ******g believable.
Last week I travelled 100 miles to the Exeter Apple Store (having first phoned to check stock availability) to buy the new 24" display. Only to be told by the ever helpful but equally fustrated staff, that my 9 month old Mac Book Pro wasn't compatible.... with no indication of it ever being either!!
OK, if you read very carefully Apple Store does say compatible with the new Mac Books, but there is a distinct lack of ONLY COMPATIBLE on the site. There must be 1000's of people out there who have bought this display on the web, only to open the box and find it useless with their existing Mac Books. What are Apple playing at?!
