If you didn’t know any better you’d assume that the X4875 came from the same product family as HP’s Photosmart C4380, thanks to its similar white/grey design and built-in WiFi. It offers separate input and output trays though, which are capable of holding up to 100 and 25 sheets of paper respectively. Lexmark also seems to be targeting a similar kind of customer as HP, which the company proudly claiming business-class credentials with print speeds of up to 30 pages per minute.
As you’d expect the X4875 has similar characteristics as its cheaper sibling the X4650, but there are a couple of important differences. First is that this model boasts a 2.4cm colour LCD which sits on the right side along with multifunction controls; the second is that it’s more capable when it comes to mono and colour prints.
That much is evident in the average print speeds. Our single-page mono test print in Word popped into the out tray in 16 seconds using Auto mode, while 10 pages surfaced in 1 minute 30 seconds. Duplex printing is also pretty quick, taking just 1 minute in fast mode to produce a five-page document. The X4875 is capable of producing decent blacks, but we did notice some feathering at smaller point sizes. Scan quality fared well, with the X4875 taking 35 seconds to produce a colour accurate facsimile of our test photo print.
Our single-page test photo appeared in 3 minutes 46 seconds at the highest quality setting, while five pages took 18 minutes 25 seconds – a reasonably speedy result. The downside is that, like the X4650, the X4875 produced some unnatural looking colours, with a yellow colour cast very much in evidence. Our prints fared a little better in the water and scratch tests, passing the first and scraping through the second with very minor evidence of marking.
Print yields for the separate pigment-based black and tricolour cartridges are better than those for the X4650, giving us 425 photo prints. With cartridge prices at £13.49 for black and £16.99 for the tricolour, that gives us a total cost per photo page print of 14.4p per photo print. Estimated shelf life is pegged at 100 years, or 200 years under glass.
