A version of Google's Chrome browser for Mac is likely to be available by Christmas, earlier than initially reported.

Google chief executive Eric Schmidt broke the news at a New York press conference responding to a question about Chrome's market share, which some have claimed is disappointing.

"I see a lot of Macs in this room, and a lot of very sophisticated people are using Macs now and we need to get a version of Chrome out for that, which we’ll have in a couple of months. The key to browser strength is speed."

Google Chrome is billed as a browser that combines minimal design with sophisticated technology to make the web faster, safer and easier.

The Mac version was expected sometime in 2010.

That's the point. Perhaps only 10% of the population own macs - but they're a hugely influential 10%. Apple owns the top end of the demographic

I wish Google could be a little bit more sophisticated. When you name a procuct "Chrome" you should not use that awful logo, reminding of Rubrik's Cube or som childs toy. Yik!

multi-billion pound company takes nearly a year to release software to small but important market share.... pathetic

I'm already using Google Chrome on Mac OSX, (Developer Release) yes it might not even be at beta stage but hey its never crashed and hasn't bugged me at all. Search 'Google Chrome Mac' in Google and download the Developer Release if your that desperate.

@BenAtRKUK So, um, you're saying you're desperate then if you're using it yourself?
