The iPhone leads the pack when it comes to using the Web over mobile devices, according to a new study released today by Informa Telecoms & Media.

Android devices come in at No. 2 despite their surging sales, because Android phones run the gamut from low end to high end, and it's the high-end devices such as the iPhone that account for most online usage. Smartphones account for 86 percent of all mobile data usage in the U.S., the survey says.

The Informa study shows the average online monthly usage of smartphones in the U.S. came to 85MB per month in 2009 and is predicted to rise to 776MB per month by 2015. For Europe, the figures are 44MB and 736MB, respectively.

Worldwide, smartphone users account for 13 percent of devices in use but for two thirds of mobile online traffic. The smartyphone data usage share worldwide is lower than that of the U.S. and Europe because of lack of high-speed mobile broadband networks in much of the world and high-price plans.

The highest smartphone online use is in South Korea and Japan, which have current online monthly usage of 271MB and 199MB, respectively - more than twice the global average.
