8. Using a UK SIM Card. We inserted a Three SIM card from our iPad. (Yes it works fine. Even though the US model is branded AT&T and comes with an AT&T SIM it is unlocked).
9. Side by Side. Putting the new iPad 2 next to the original iPad shows how much thinner it is.
10. On to the case. The box for the Smart Cover is a little more explanitory. The front shows just the case but the rear has plenty of explaination.
11. The case outside of the box. Not much in the way of packaging. Just the case itself inside the box.
12. Clipped on to the iPad 2. The Smart Cover clicks on to the side and switches on the iPad 2 (which is suggesting here that it'd like to be setup). That's what we're going to do now.

im hoping to pick one up in america this week, glad you have confirmed the 3G one is unlocked id seen other sites say this but trust you more and gives me peace of mind, is ther any other issues with buying one in the states i should be aware of and if so how can you over come this

I assume the UK box will be bigger to accommodate the 3 pin plug!

Just make sure you pick up an AT&T model and not a Verizon one. The Verizon model does not have a SIM card inside so won't work in the UK.

I expect so. The UK box was bigger for the iPad in the US than the UK for that reason.

Incidentally if you pick one up from the US it will have a US adaptor. Although you can switch the socket connection on it with one from any other Apple iPad or iPhone adaptor (or just charge using the USB cable attached to a Mac).
Apart from that. No issues really, the App Store isn't fully working in the UK (recommendations and featured don't appear - but Charts and Updates work) but that will change when the device launches. It was the same when the iPad launched.
Physically they are the same device as far as we can tell.

Are there any issues if you buy a WIFI version only. I have a 3 network mifi and want to use it with the ipad rather than 3G.

Shouldn't think so. we picked up the WiFi iPad last year and as far as I could tell it was identical to the UK model (apart from the adaptor connection).
As far as I can tell they're the same units that roll off the factory. Only the power adaptor is changed.

Hi Mark,
I read elsewhere that if you buy a US AT&T iPad2 + 3G, you have to 'initialise' the device in the US before you leave US shores. Apparently you do this by putting in a Pay as You go card and connecting it to the AT&T network over there. If you don't 'initialise' the device before leaving the US, apparently it won't work on a UK network when you put in a UK sim when back in the UK. Can you confirm that? Did you have someone do that for your test model above OR did you just put in the Sim card from 3 and it worked on 'startup'?

We didn't do any of that. That sounds completely wrong to me. As we said, they're the same device.
The device was sealed when it came to the UK and we set it up from scratch over here.
Perhaps somebody is getting confused with using an AT&T SIM card abroad.

Excellent Mark. Thanks for the response. As long as I have confirmation from someone that has actually done it themselves, which you have just provided me with, I am happy to buy one in the US. Thanks again. On another note - do you have an opinion on what the best network in the UK is to use in terms of consistently good signal coverage?
