Apple this morning updated its website with a note to the following effect: "The MobileMe transition is underway but is taking longer than expected. Please refer to the official System Status to the right for current information on the availability of MobileMe services.  We apologize for any inconvenience."

MobileMe web apps remain unavailable at time of writing.

The new iPhone-friendly service offers push email, calendars, and contacts and works with the iPhone's mail, calendar, and contacts applications in addition to working with Mail, iCal, and Address book on the Mac and Outlook on the PC.

MobileMe costs £59 per year.
