Play.com emails customer details to other customers in error

The names and addresses of Play.com customers have been leaked to other users of the popular online retailer the company has said.

A number of customers told the BBC that they had received emails from Play.com regarding items they had not ordered. The emails contained the names and addresses of other customers that did in fact order the product. Although credit card details were not included on the emails.

"We were alerted to an incident that appears to have affected some customers for a short period of time in the early hours of this morning, and the first thing we'd like to say is that we apologise for any inconvenience our customers have experienced as a result," Play.com said.

"We'd like to reassure our customers that the cause of the incident has been identified and resolved. We take these matters very seriously and are now investigating how this incident occurred in the first place, so that we can prevent it happening in the future," the company added.

Play.com did not say how many customers had been affected.

Play.com is among the most popular online shops in the UK for DVDs. CDS, games and movies. In February 2009, Play.com was the top retailer in the National Consumer Satisfaction Index.

What do you expect from a company that doesn't encrypt their password reminder emails?

How can you encrypt an email without setting up a complicated exchange of public/private keys?
