Fri, 20 Nov 2009 Expect Apple tablet at around £400 - analyst
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster does not believe Apple would sell tablet for $2,000
An analyst is predicting that the Apple tablet will retail for between $500 and $700 (£300-£425) rather than the $2,000 (£1,213) suggested by Technology Business Research analyst Ezra Gottheil.
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster does not buy the claims that a high-end tablet with an OLED screen would retail for $2,000 (£1,213), according to an Apple Insider report.
If the Apple tablet is priced higher than $700 (£424) when it does launch next year, it could significantly reduce its potential sales, according to Munster.
Munster believes that Apple will price the new device somewhere between the £149 iPod touch and the £799 MacBook. Piper Jaffray has forecast that the tablet device will cost between $500 (£303) and $700 (£424).
Munster’s report noted: "As a point of perspective, iSuppli has reported the bill of materials on the iPhone 3GS is $179 (£108). Backing out the phone functionality, we believe the bill of materials is about $160 (£97). Assuming the tablet is 3x the size of the iPod touch implies a bill of materials for the tablet of around $480 (£291)."
Munster believes the hardware will be priced to compete with the growing netbook market, even if it means less revenue for the Mac maker.

I'll declare myself as a 'stab in the dark' analyst. I predict it will be closer to the £650 - £ 850 and won't be released until the next iPhone launch which will be on the 15th June. Mark it in your calendar. Oh yeah next weeks lottery results:- 03, 07, 23, 27, 31, 44 and the bonus ball 19. There will be 62 jackpot winners in the next draw (most from this forum strangely).

It was absolutely ludicrous that anybody would suggest that Apple would release an iTablet at a price point of $2000, at least for the form factor and feature set that would make it more like a notebook computer or iTouch on steroids. I would avoid any analyst making claims like that.

A 2,000 tablet would destroy the company. In my wildest dreams I can't imagine anyone, even a fanboy, plunking down that much for a giant iPod I don't care WHAT it does. The rumor was probably started by Apple so when the real one comes out one might say "Whew, only 1,200. That's less than 2k"

Apple could sell it for £2000, they could sell it for £10,000 if they wanted.
Fools and their money are easily parted. Remember the "I am rich" iPhone app for $999. There's a type of person that would pay whatever Apple were asking, in fact the more the better because the product needs to be put out of reach of plebs like us to be more attractive to 'a certain type of person'. "Oooh look what he's got, they cost a fortune." Who'd pay $1.49 million to know what the time is ?

Dragonfly,
Agreed. Going by the price of Macs, it seems inconceivable that Apple would sell a fully-fledged tablet computer for much less than about £699 to £799. Spot on that there's some folk who'd love it to be even more expensive than that!

Honestly, what does it take to be an 'analyst' - I'm sorry but the sentence about working out its price based on the bill of materials for an iphone is hilarious - so as it's about three times the size of an iphone then? Just times the bill by three and we're done?!! It will be about £700.

Dragonfly ... Apple never asked for $999 for the "I am Rich" app. It's an app! And anyone stupid enough to spend their money on it must own a PC! (probably a diamond studded one.
