XtremeMac LunaLX
- Manufacturer: Xtreme Mac (http://www.xtrememac.com)
- Pros: Range of alarm and snooze settings, good remote control, punchy sound with good bass response, bold LCD, reasonable price tag
- Cons: Preset options are a bit on the stingy side, sound isn’t as full as that from larger units
- Price: £69
- Star rating:
The Luna LX oozes quality. There’s something about the styling that feels very cool. Maybe this is down to the elegant curved corners and subtle detailing on the control knobs, but whatever it is it’s a great looker.
There’s also an attention to detail here that makes the Luna LX really stand out. You’ll even find a little protective cover for the dock connector - handy for protecting it from the ravages of time.
The LCD menu system is cleverly devised, featuring a dimming control plus options for quick and easy access to alarm and radio settings. The four corner-set control buttons on the top of the unit allow easy access to functions and look pretty good to boot.
There’s an auxiliary port too, which means that it’s possible to hook up other non-Apple devices. The clock and alarm have a backup from two supplied AA batteries in case the unit gets unplugged by mistake, or you have a powercut.
AM or FM stations can be found with ease. There’s only four presets which is a bit weak. However, you can’t complain about two separate alarm functions with adjustable volume controls and snooze settings that can be tailored to your requirements - up to 60 minutes for really lazy souls.
We also love the sleep function that gradually decreases the display light and volume as you drift off.
The remote control is one of the best we’ve seen from this particular selection of alarm clocks. It mirrors the controls on the unit even down to the snooze button and can be used to scroll through your iPod playlists. That gives this unit a real edge when it comes to control options.
Playing back music produces respectable results. Considering that the unit isn’t all that big, there’s a commendable bass response and the overall delivery is quite well balanced. A two channel amplifier system aids this along with dual full-range speakers. It’s not top of the tree on audio delivery, but for overall functions, attention to detail and good looks, the Luna LX is hard to fault given the price tag.
