There’s nothing fancy about the HD 212 Pro headphones, but they’re a great choice if you’re looking for an affordable set of over-ear headphones.
The headphones are fairly basic - just a set of earpieces with large plastic headband. There’s no volume control or any other added extras - in fact, the most notable feature is the enormous 3m audio cable, which is so long you could easily trip over it unless you make a point of wrapping it up to keep it out of the way.
The HD 212 Pro is one of the cheaper sets of headphones in Sennheiser’s ‘DJ’ range, and you can currently pick them up for less than £30. Considering the credit card-friendly price, we were quite impressed by the sound they produced.
It’s a very clean sound that picks out detail effectively right across the frequency range, and the clarity is fantastic. Many less expensive headphones suffer from weak bass, but Sennheiser says that the HD 212 Pro phones are designed to put a bit of emphasis on the bass, and the result is a crisp sound that works well for rock and dance music.
If we had a criticism it might be that the sound is almost clinically clean and sometimes lacks warmth. Classical music might benefit from a slightly warmer sound. However, these are meant for thrifty DJs, so that’s not a major criticism.
These aren’t noise-cancelling headphones either, although the large, padded earpieces do help to reduce background noise in noisy environments, and the sturdy plastic components should be strong enough to cope with a little rough treatment too.
The HD 212 Pro will therefore be a good choice for the amateur DJ who needs an affordable and reliable set of phones for weekend parties.
