Geeks of the world hold hands and rejoice. For you no longer have to pretend your iPhone is a Starfleet Communicator because now it can also be a fully fledged Communicator and Captain's Log and record your day-to-day adventures.
The Captain's Log app (iTunes link) from Paramount Studios turns your iPhone into virtual approximation of the Captain's Log famously used by William Shatner in his role as Captain Kirk.
It combines audio recording, with sound effects, google maps, and the photo feature of the iPhone enabling you to log your adventures round strange planets interacting with weird alien creatures. We used Kings Cross.

You can then submit these logs by posting them to the map, or to the usual social networking sites: Twitter, FaceBook, Tumblr or send them via email.
Essentially it's a diary app, but with added Star Trek insignia. We particularly like the way you can add Star Trek sound effects over your audio recordings and the way it animates into a planet before displayed satellite imagery from Google Earth.
You can also get a 3D view of the Enterprise and use the gyroscope in an iPhone 4 to move around it.
There's some debate in the Macworld office about whether it's a better waste of time than Talking Tom Cat, but there's no doubt that it's good for giggles.
