Wow. If any of the monitors in this group test deserve to come out ahead of Apple’s then the Dell U2711 is it. True, it’s the most expensive here by a wide margin – at £948.23, it’s nearly four times more expensive than the BenQ M2700HD – but, boy, you can see what the money’s been spent on.

Fresh out of the box it instantly impresses. It’s sturdy and reassuringly weighty with a heavy aluminium foot that incorporates swivel, tilt and height adjustment – something even the 27in Apple LED Cinema Display doesn’t do. It’s also the easiest monitor to set up and use. Press the blue backlit touch sensitive buttons on the bezel and you’re rewarded with a smart looking white on black UI that deliver a wide range of picture settings and tweaks.

The Dell U2711 delivers a great range of connectivity options, including two DVI ports, one HDMI, one DisplayPort and an XD/SD/MMC card slot. You also get a comprehensive set of audio outputs, enabling you to feed sound signals to off-board speakers, including a subwoofer. Sadly, the Dell U2711 doesn’t have built-in speakers, but you can cough up an extra £36.18 for the optional AX510PA soundbar kit.

The Dell U2711 also matches Apple’s 27in LED Cinema Display when it comes to technology such as In-Plane Switching (IPS), which enables you to view the screen from a wide range of viewing angles with no loss of picture quality. The Dell U2711 is also ideal for business, graphics and photography professionals thanks to its 2,560 x 1,440 screen resolution, wide colour gamut and factory-tuned Adobe RGB and sRGB modes.

When it comes to performance, the Dell U2711 is a knockout. Image quality and colour fidelity are incredible. Watch an HD movie clip and you’ll be surprised by the sheer detail and realism on offer, the Dell delivering especially sumptuous results with tricky skin tones. This is one screen you could easily enjoy all day. The only slight blot is that the U2711’s response time of 6ms, although this had no noticeable effect on our movie or game playing experience.
