Watch and record live TV on your iPhone or iPad
Not that long ago we looked at the Tizi, a TV tuner from Equinux that lets you watch and record live TV on your iPhone or iPad. We were disappointed because we were only able to pick up a few channels, and those were blocky and pretty much unwatchable. So when we saw Elgato's tivizen, which looks identical to the Tizi, we didn't hold out much hope.
We were pleasantly surprised, however. Once we'd tuned the Elgato device we got a good selection of channels. There was the odd bit of blockiness, but it was watchable.
Both devices have the same issue when it comes to recording however. Unfortunately it is not possible to set your iPhone or iPad to record a programme. The only way to record on your iOS device is to press record when the programme starts – and while the iOS app is recording you won't be able to use your phone (so you might as well be watching the programme).
The Elgato Tivizen has an added bonus in that it can also work with your Mac if you are running the EyeTV software. In this case you can record and eventually transfer the recording to your iPhone or iPad should you wish. Of course you could use any Elgato tuner to do this. The tivizen costs £145.99 compared to the EyeTV DTT Deluxe at £79.99.
Obviously the benefit of the tivizen (and tizi) is that you can cut out the middle man and record straight onto your device. Which is a nice idea, but since you can't set the recording to happen, and your iOS device is out of action while you do so, it's probably better suited to iPad users than iPhone users who might want to be able to answer a call.
