The DCP-J925DW packs plenty of useful features into a clever and compact design

Incredible attention to detail makes the Brother DCP-J925DW an excellent all-round office printer. It’s smaller than most of its rivals and has an attractively stenciled top panel. The compact design is more impressive when you realise that the DCP-J925DW has a built-in automatic document feeder (ADF) that can be used to scan and copy multiple documents. The ADF folds flat into the top panel of the printer, a much neater solution than on rivals, such as the Kodak ESP 2170, which also has an ADF. It also has a 2,400 x 2,400dpi scanner/copier.

Setting up the printer is very straightforward, as the touch-screen control panel displays detailed instructions to help you get started – it even warned us that one ink cartridge hadn’t been inserted properly and needed to be pushed in a bit more firmly.

The printer includes both WiFi and Ethernet networking, so it’s a good option for offices that don’t use WiFi. Printing costs are average, at around 3p per page for black and white and 10p for colour when using Brother’s high-yield ink cartridges.

Small business users will find the printer’s speed more than respectable. Brother quotes speeds of 35 pages per minute (ppm) for black-and-white printing, and 27ppm for colour, but like most manufacturers it bases those figures on the printer’s lower-quality draft mode. Even so, the actual speeds that we achieved of 8ppm for black and white and 4ppm for colour still make the DCP-J925DW the fastest printer in this group, rivalled only by the Epson Stylus Photo and Canon Pixma.

However, the Epson and Canon printers do have a slight edge when it comes to photo-quality printing. The DCP-J925DW uses the four standard CMYK colours – cyan, magenta, yellow and black – for colour printing, and although it’s capable of producing very good photo prints when using glossy photo paper, the colours aren’t quite as vibrant and natural as those produced by the five-colour Canon and six-colour Epson.
