The Pixma MG6150’s extra grey ink helps produce impressive photo output
- Manufacturer: Canon
- Pros: Very good photo output and printing performance; good range of features, including tray for CD and DVD printing
- Cons: Above average printing costs for photos
- Price: £199
- Star rating:

Canon’s Pixma MG6150 is one of the more expensive printers in this group, with a price tag pushing the £200 mark, but it works hard to justify that price by offering high-quality printing and a versatile set of features.
It’s not particularly exciting to look at initially, with just a small pop-up LCD display adorning the bulky, black rectangle. But when you plug it in the top of the printer lights up with a selection of glowing, touch-sensitive controls that really catch the eye. The MG6150 also includes a 4,800dpi scanner/copier and can connect to a home or office network using either WiFi or the built-in Ethernet interface.
As well as printing directly from a Mac or PC, the MG6150 will accept most types of memory card, and has a USB slot that will allow you to print straight off a memory stick. Canon also offers an app that lets you print direct from an iPhone or iPad, and if you’ve got a Canon camera or camcorder you can even print stills taken straight from your video recordings.
Print quality is very good – most notable for the warm and natural colours that it produced in our photo prints. The MG6150 uses five coloured inks to print photographs, with a grey ink cartridge alongside the conventional cyan, magenta, yellow and black inks. This helps to produce subtle shades of colour that work particularly well with flesh tones in photos. The grey ink also works well when printing black and white photos and greyscale artwork too.

Using that extra ink does push up the printing cost for photos, which come in at around 13p per page, but photography enthusiasts may feel that the extra quality is worth it. Straightforward black-and-white printing costs about 4p per page, which is closer to the average, so it’s fine for day-to-day office use.
