The Envy 110 has a striking, slimline design, but the level of performance is a little disappointing given the high price

HP’s Envy printers are undoubtedly among the most stylish and strikingly designed printers we’ve ever seen. The sleek, low-profile design of the Envy 110 makes it one of the most compact multifunction printers currently available, and its ingenious paper-handling system saves space by feeding your printed documents onto a support arm that pops out when required and then folds itself out of the way when you’re finished. The Envy 110 is finished off in gleaming white, but there’s also a 114 model in black that’s available through the Apple Store, specifically for Mac users.

The printer is packed with up-to-date features too. HP was the first company to support AirPrint, and the Envy 110 also includes HP’s ePrint system that allows you to print over the internet by emailing documents straight to the printer.

In all other respects, this is a fairly conventional inkjet printer. Text quality is good, although its standard mode doesn’t have the crisp blackness that we’ve seen on other HP printers, so you might need to step up to the slower best setting when you need really sharp text. Photo printing was very good though, with bright colours and no signs of banding even when printing on inexpensive plain paper.

HP quotes maximum speeds of up to 30ppm for black text and 25ppm for colour, although you’d need to use the printer’s fast draft mode to get anything like those speeds. Using the standard print settings we got a relatively modest 6.5ppm for black text and 3.5ppm for colour text and graphics, while a glossy 4in x 6in photo print took around 62 seconds.
