Sony’s headphones don’t have the very best sound quality, but it’s certainly tolerable – and they’re pleasingly affordable

The Sony MDR-AS50G headphones have a design element that can divide opinion: a semi-rigid loop that sits behind your neck and holds the earphones in your ears. It’s a strategy that can go wrong when done carelessly. But as with the Philips, it works well.

The elasticity of the loop is just right, gently but firmly pushing the eartips where they’re wanted and ensuring a great fit.

The quality of fit helps with audio quality too, even if these unsurprisingly can’t compete with high-end audiophile models. There isn’t a massive oomph to the sound, but it’s warm and clear, and coped easily with the pop and gentler rock acts we threw at it.

The disco was pretty successful: you won’t be blown away, but there was a kinetic snap to the beats coming out of the Sony eartips.

We liked the lack of sound leakage, but there’s no on-cable remote. Our only real reservations concern robustness: while the headphones themselves are sturdy, the cable is thin and feels like a potential long-term vulnerability.
