RetroRoids is a fast, fun and cross-platform remake of the arcade classic, Asteroids.
The game is a simple one. You start in a space ship, inconveniently placed in the middle of an asteroid field. The space bar fires your guns, blowing up approaching rocks before they can destroy you; the left and right arrow keys rotate your ship; and the up arrow fires your engines to move you out of the way.
These controls are enough to get you out of trouble most of the time. But if things are looking desperate then pressing the down arrow will instantly transport you through hyperspace to another part of the screen. But use this with caution - it's just as likely to place you directly in the path of an asteroid, as to deposit you somewhere safe.
Okay, it's true, the graphics are, well, a little basic. But that's part of its retro charm, and the author plays on this further with options to add ghosting and flicker. Add realistic sounds effects and RetroRoids provides plenty of fast-paced gameplay with a strong and nostalgic similarity to the coin-operated original.
There's a high score, but no high score table, unfortunately. Still, RetroRoids is an entertaining arcade remake and a fun way to spend a few minutes
