TechSmith SnagIt for Chrome is a free browser extension for capturing, editing and sharing images, or recording desktop activity.

The screenshot tool is surprisingly versatile. It can capture a rectangular region on the screen, the visible area of a window or its entire contents (scrolling, if necessary); you're able to annotate it with arrows, rectangles, ellipses or text captions; and there are options to share it via Google Drive, or download a local copy.

Screen recording is average. You're able to choose the window to capture, and there are no watermarks or limits on the length of the recording, but SnagIt records microphone audio only (not tab or system).

Whatever you're recording, the finished movie may be shared from Google Drive, uploaded directly to YouTube, or downloaded as an animated GIF (if it's a maximum of 20 seconds long).

Verdict

SnagIt's screen capture, annotation and Google Drive support makes it a handy tool for sharing images and videos with others, but the limited audio support and lack of configurability will be an issue for some.
