Dot to Dot Numbers and Letters

Price: £1.49
Rating: 4+
Version tested: 1.6.1
Compatibility: Requires iOS 6.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5.

This app, again by Apps in My Pocket Ltd for the under fives, teaches counting and times tables through dot to dot games. It starts off with very simple counting by ones dot to dots, at the end of which the shape drawn through the numbers becomes a picture, which pulsates to a cheer. It’s a hypnotic experience, although the numbers could be bigger.

The simple beginning is deceptive because there are complicated settings stretching to puzzles requiring times tables backwards and randomly, and against the clock at the top age range.

Interactive Telling Time - Learning to tell time is fun

Price: £1.99
Rating: 4+
Version tested: 3.3
Compatibility: Requires iOS 4.3 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5

A comprehensive time teaching app with an impressive array of different clocks, both analogue and digital, with sections that combine the two. Developers GiggleUpKids Apps and Educational Games have got together with artists, teachers and other educators and parents to bring you this very flexible learning platform about time, with 5 levels for children from 3 to 12.

Games include stop the clock (quite difficult at the highest level), and a clock puzzle allowing you to build a virtual clock.

Story Builder for iPad

Price: £2.49
Rating: 4+
Version tested: 1.8
Compatibility: Requires iOS 4.3 or later. Compatible with iPad.

Story Builder by the Mobile Education Store LLC builds stories in stages in order to teach correct sentence structure to children of six and above. At the lowest levels you are given the first half of the sentence, later stages just show a picture and asked to write about it, in complete sentences.

The app is engaging, with lots of control within the levels, although at the level of writing complete stories, an older 21st Century child may want more interactivity unless they like being asked to create stories about pictures.

The voice record option allows children to hear their stories back and save them in the archive.

Tense Builder

Price: £6.99
Rating: 4+
Version tested: 1.3
Compatibility: Requires iOS 5.0 or later. Compatible with iPad.

This clever little app by the Mobile Application Store LLC teaches all about appropriate use of tenses in sentences. After watching a short animated movie featuring an active scenario, with extensive sound effects you are then asked to chose from several options and drag your choice into a sentence to complete it in the correct tense.

You can record your own voice saying the sentences, and at any time you can select the “full lesson”, which explains whether the verb in question is regular or irregular and how to use it. For children between 3 and 10 years old.

Rainbow Sentences

Price: £5.49
Rating: 4+
Version tested: 1.4
Compatibility: Requires iOS 5.1 or later. Compatible with iPad.

This deceptively simple app by the Mobile Education Store LLC teaches sentence building through interactive pictures, in stages of difficulty from single words, through to complicated sentence ordering. The app teaches the difference between the who what where and why parts of sentences by colour coding them. A neat feature is the ability to record your own voice speaking the words and sentences.

Recommended for split age groups of 3-6 and 8-10 the app includes an extensive tutorial which shows how much functionality is hidden beneath the uncluttered interface.

Pines to Vines - The Forest Biome

Price: £6.99
Rating: 4+
Version tested: 1.4
Compatibility: Requires iOS 6.1 or later. Compatible with iPad.

This award winning app, developed by Mobile Education Store LLC, in collaboration with Oregon State University’s Department of Forestry, teaches about our world’s forests and is aligned with the core curriculum. The content is deep and rich with levels of interactivity and a lush soundtrack, and covers topics as diverse as forest layers, plant and animal wildlife, and forest threats. All major forest types are covered and can be switched on and off individually.

The app blends, video footage, charts, tables and interactive bookmarks, and study notes. Designed in part for teachers, there are personal dropbox folders to store individual student bookmarks and other material including personal notes.

Explain Everything

Price: £1.99
Rating: 4+
Version tested: 2.34
Compatibility: Requires iOS 5.1 or later. Compatible with iPad.

Describing itself as an easy-to-use design, screencasting and interactive whiteboard tool for anyone over 4, Explain Everything by Morris Cooke, will bring digital creativity into the forefront of any subject including specifically educational ones.

The app allows complete flexibility in creating layered sideshows including live video, real-time notation, highlighting, writing, and all the usual arrows and markers including a laser pointer.

The raft of options for import and export is truly impressive, you can import PDF, PPT, DOC, XLS, Keynoe Pages, Numgers and RTF files from Evernote, Dropbox, Box, GDrive, WebDAV, Email, iTunes.

Export includes MP4 Movies, PDF documents, PNG images or XPL project files directly from your iPad: all this and you don’t have to open an account to use it.

Although a bit fiddly initially but there are lots of short informative videos accessible directly from the app.

Barefoot World Atlas

Price: £2.99
Rating: 4+
Version tested: 3.0.3
Compatibility: Requires iOS 7.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5.

With over 4 million downloads worldwide the developers of this interactive globe, Touch Press, must be doing something right. Its focus on people, animals, and other elements of place, over geographical boundaries of countries certainly adds to the engaging quality of the app.

Tempting small icons invite you to explore sites of historical interest, flaura and fauna, national characteristics, and much more. Clicking on icons brings forward a paragraph of information which can also be read out to you. All this is accompanied by atmospheric sound effects and indigenous music. The app is aimed at children 9 - 11.

Book Creator for iPad

Price: £2.99
Rating: 4+
Version tested: 3.0.1
Compatibility: Requires iOS 6.0 or later. Compatible with iPad.

The multi-award winning Book Creator by Red Jumper Studio is an amazingly simple app for making books that you can open in iBooks, Evernote, Dropbox or Edmodo. The app, which works with iPad and requires iOs 6.0 or later, is so easy to use, it practically does it all for you. The inclusion of layers in an app this simple is genius because it allows you the flexibility to create quite complex stories, reports, albums, or workbooks, adding photos from camera roll or taken within the app, add a sound track, type, or draw with fingers or stylus.

You can try a full-featured free version of the app whose only limit is that it only allows you to make a single book. If you’re hooked, the paid, limitless version is only £2.99 away.
