Best games for old iPhones | Best games for iPhone 3Gs, 4, 4s and more

While there's a growing number of amazing apps and games on the App Store, not all iPhones provide the best gaming experience – especially older iPhones that are getting a little long in the tooth. However, while the likes of the iPhone 3Gs and iPhone 4 can’t quite provide the same processing power as recent iterations of the iPhone, there are still quite a few games that run well on older devices – and here’s our top picks.

Best games for old iPhone: Angry Birds

Angry Birds is one of the most iconic mobile games of all time, rocketing to fame with its overhauled and gorgeous version of popular browser game Crush the Castle. However, it wasn’t the initial app that caused its popularity, it was its five years of free updates and content that sold it to fans. From the popularity came many spin offs, but the original is arguably the most approachable of the series – it’s also a bit gentler on older iPhones, as it was originally designed with those in mind.

Best games for old iPhone: Tiny Wings

Like Angry Birds, Tiny Wings was also a superstar in the early days of the App Store, providing us with an endless side-scroller where physics (and a fairly useless bird) are used to score big points. The aim of the game is to get as far as you can before the sun sets, using the wavy environment to build up momentum to propel your bird with tiny wings as far as possible, before it comes crashing back down to Earth to do it all over again. It’s simple, fun, works as a stress reliever and requires minimal processing power to play.

Best games for old iPhone: Super Stickman Golf

Super Stickman Golf isn’t overly complicated, but what it does do, it does well. Players will find themselves faced with an increasingly difficult golf courses in increasingly weird and wonderful locations, with the aim of putting the ball in as little number of turns as possible – just like the real game. Dangerous obstacles and difficult environments make this harder than it sounds, and can bring hours of enjoyment for those with older iPhones.

Best games for old iPhone: Threes!

Apart from the fact that it can run on pretty much any iPhone due to its low processing power, Threes! is one of our favourite puzzlers currently available for iOS. The app has been so popular that it has inspired a number of clones, but none can beat what the original has to offer. It’s essentially a sliding puzzle where you combine numbers to get higher numbers – two and one make three, two threes make six, two sixes make twelve, etc – with a new tile appearing with every swipe. While the concept is simple, it takes a lot to master and rack up insanely high scores.

Best games for old iPhone: Ridiculous Fishing

Ridiculous Fishing is actually three mini games in one – first up, you need to get your hook as low as possible by avoiding obstacles and other fish. Once you’re out of line, or you hit a fish, phase two begins – reeling in the catch, where you must hook as many fish as possible while avoiding jellyfish. Then, last but not least, you throw your catch into the air and shoot it. Because why wouldn’t you shoot the fish you just caught to eat? It sounds weird but it’s a fun game to play, and features a great upgrade system that should make you want to reach the bottom of the insanely deep lake.

Best games for old iPhone: Canabalt

Canabalt is the original endless runner, and is arguably responsible for the boom of endless runners like Jetpack Joyride and Temple Run. Running onto our screens during the early days of the App Store, Canabalt offers a simple gameplay experience – tap to jump – and when combined with impressive sound effects and a simple narrative (you’re running away from the apocalypse), provides a game that should keep you entertained. It’s fairly basic, with no upgrade system or many elements on screen apart from the runner and the rooftops, making it an ideal game to run on older iPhones.

Best games for old iPhone: Doodle Jump

Unlike Angry Birds, Doodle Jump hasn’t spawned a number of sequels (although it has been transformed into an arcade game), or really featured many updates since its launch, it’s still a hugely popular game that’ll have players coming back time and time again. For those that don’t know, the aim of the game is to get Doodle the Doodler to jump upwards from platform to platform, shooting any enemies that he sees and avoiding broken/damaged platforms. It’s simple, straight forward and a joy to play with various themes/environments to play through.

Best games for old iPhone: Space Invaders Infinity Gene

While there are a number of retro game ports available on the App Store, developer Taito did something slightly different with Space Invaders Infinity Gene. Rather than port the original Space Invaders game, the experience has been evolved into something new and exciting. While it’s still essentially about blasting waves of aliens with your ship, the game now transforms as you progress with new enemies and attacks, as well as a change in scenery. While the game doesn’t take up the full display on more recent widescreen iPhones, it’ll do just fine on smaller, older iPhones.

Best games for old iPhone: Edge

After almost 8 years on the App Store, Edge is a touch-enhanced puzzler in which you control a rolling box around geometric worlds grabbing colourful cubes as you go. As you progress, the levels become increasingly difficult with additional elements like switches and game-ending drops. The controls, though subtle, allow you to carefully navigate tricky environments and even hang off edges. It’s easy to play, enjoyable and there’s even a sequel if you manage to conquer the first game.
