Google has followed the likes of Microsoft and created its own iOS keyboard, dubbed Gboard. Compared to other third-party keyboards that offer everything from GIFs to random Kim Kardashian emoji, Gboard allows users to quickly perform a Google search from within the keyboard itself, no matter what app you're using. The search results can then be quickly shared with whomever you're talking to.

It's not just standard Google results, though - you can search for GIFs, emojis, addresses and phone numbers and more. It's displayed in true Google fashion using cards, and all you need to do is tap the card to send it to the recipient. It also features Swiftkey-esque 'Glide Typing' allowing users to slide their fingers from one key to another instead of tapping them, speeding up the typing process.

Shortly after releasing its Hub Keyboard for iOS (which you'll find more information about later in this article), Microsoft launched a new World Flow app for iOS, and it's one of the most interesting keyboards we've seen for the iPhone yet.

In addition to predicting what you'd like to type next and allowing you to swipe to speed up typing, you'll also get a one-handed typing mode that puts all of the keys in reach of your thumb thanks to a clever curved design.

Annoyingly, Microsoft has only launched Word Flow in the US so far, but we're expecting it to hit the UK iOS App Store soon.

The standard iOS keyboard was pretty basic, and its auto-correct feature was  unpredictable. Until iOS 8 Apple had always imposed a blanket restriction on apps that duplicate core features of iOS itself – such as the built-in keyboard – so its decision to allow iOS 8 to use third-party (non-Apple) keyboard apps was a pretty big step forward.

However, in iOS 8 Apple also made improvements to its own keyboard by introducing a new feature that it calls Quick Type. Quick Type attempts to predict what you’ll type next by offering three different words that you can choose from. It's designed to understand the context of what you're typing too, so it will suggest more formal or more casual language depending on whether you’re sending an email to your boss or a text message to a friend. It can also learn your writing style as you use it, and will remember if you like to use particular words or phrases when you’re writing.

In iOS 9, Apple has added further improvements to its keyboard, including a built-in Shortcut Bar for iPad with quick access to bold, italic, underline, copy and paste.

Flesky may not have a suggestions bar like the iOS keyboard and other rivals, but it does offer lots of customisation and extensions that we think you'll find useful. It offers lots of colourful keyboard themes and sizes, and even offers extensions for GIFs, stickers, emoji and more. It also supports gestures that help make typing much quicker than usual.

It does take a bit of getting used to, as its predictive engine works when you press the Space bar rather than while you're typing a work, but it is almost always successful so once you learn to trust it you'll be tapping away at high speed, confident that Fleksy would clean up any mistakes for me. You can also hide the Space bar and increase the size of the keyboard to make typing even easier, and then just swipe your finger to the right to add a space, or swipe twice to add other punctuation marks.

The Android version of SwiftKey was hugely popular already, so it's only natural that SwiftKey is popular among iPhone users now that it's available for iOS too. 

In fact, it’s probably accurate to say that the current iOS keyboard takes its lead from SwiftKey, with a suggestion bar that sits at the top of the keyboard and displays three words that you can quickly type in full with a quick tap of your finger. That similarity between the two keyboards means that SwiftKey isn’t an essential app for iOS users, although quite a few people share my preference for its darker colour scheme, which helps to make the suggestion bar stand out a bit more, and there are various colours and themes to choose from (although some of them will cost you),

However, SwiftKey still stands out from the basic iOS keyboard as it also offers a ‘flow’ option that allows you to type by sliding your finger across the keyboard rather than lifting your finger to tap each letter separately. Some people really like this approach – though it can take a bit of getting used to – and the app is free, so there’s no harm in downloading it and trying it out for a while.

Swype is the most popular of the 'swipe' keyboard apps, which take a completely different approach to typing than the conventional iOS keyboard.

Instead of tapping on each letter individually, Swype allows you to slide your finger across the keyboard, passing over several letters with a single, continuous movement of your finger. It’s not the only keyboard app that works this way – SwiftKey includes a ‘flow’ option that is similar – but it’s one of the more accurate apps of this type, and does a good job of tracking your fingers and guessing which letters you were aiming for even if you occasionally slip and hit the wrong letter.

Another handy option is the ability to display a variety of accents and other symbols – such as é – simply by pressing and holding on individual keys. Swype also includes its own numeric keypad, with a numbers arranged on a 3x3 grid like a telephone keypad. Many people prefer that layout, but the conventional numeric keys and symbol layouts used by iOS 9 are still available if you prefer to use those instead. Swype isn’t free, but it only costs 79p, and many people find that it allows them to type really fast once they’ve had a little practice.

Microsoft has released the Hub keyboard recently. It tries to help you out by pulling in information from other apps and services you use to help you get things done quicker. Supposedly. Be it URLs you recently visited or files you recently received, it's like a beefed up suggestions box like you'd find on iOS' normal keyboard.

If you sign into your Office 365 account, it'll become even cleverer for you.

I have a feeling that the guys who developed TouchPal must be Queen fans, because when I started to type the line – ‘Let them eat…’ – from Killer Queen, the app immediately offered ‘cake’ as the correct suggestion. That could just be a coincidence, but the standard iOS keyboard offered me ‘chocolate’ and ‘cereal’ instead, so TouchPal gets the thumbs up from me.

TouchPal works like a conventional keyboard, allowing you to tap each letter individually, but as you get used to it you can switch into ‘slide’ mode and type words by sliding your finger across several letters in a single smooth motion. We found that its autocorrect feature was very efficient, although – apart from its liking for Queen songs – it didn’t strike us a being obviously superior to rival keyboard apps.

It is, however, completely free at the moment, and also includes a collection of hundreds of emoji icons that you can use in messages, as well as lots of different colour schemes that you can apply to the keyboard including this crazy game one. There’s also an option to take a picture using the camera, or to import an existing photo, and then use your photos to create a custom design for your own keyboard.

This one's a bit of a bonus entry but could come in handy nonetheless. It's actually an application designed for your Mac that lets you turn your Mac's keyboard into a Bluetooth keyboard to use with your iPad. Simply type on your Mac's keyboard while using Typeeto and the text will instead appear on your iPad's screen.

Better yet, you can connect your Mac's keyboard to a number of other devices, too, including your iPhone, Android phones and tablets, games consoles and the Apple TV.
