Gumdrop Marine and Industry: Serious waterproofing

There are lots of tough cases and covers available for your iPad - whether you've got one of the iPad mini models, an iPad Air 1 or 2, or the iPad Pro - and in this feature we're going to look at the best way to keep your tablet safe.

We thought we'd start with some serious iPad protection from water.

If you're looking to take an iPad out on a boat, then the Gumdrop Marine and Industry case is the best way to keep it waterproof. The Marine and Industry completely covers the screen and port covers, which also offers substantial protection against use. On top of this is a splashguard to protect against waves. It has a quick-release boat-mounting option for attaching the iPad to the vessel.

Price: $79.95 (about £54) plus international shipping and taxes

Griffin Survivor Case for iPad Mini in Black: Military-standard protection

If you're after a sturdy case for an iPad mini, the Griffin Survivor is a great option. It's been tested against conditions for the US Department of Defence (MIL-STD-810) and offers great wind, rain and dust protection.

The Survivor has also got silicone cladding to protect against vibration, so it's a great protective case for those working with industrial machinery.

DryCASE: Best iPad cover for the beach

If you're looking for the best case to use when taking your iPad to the beach, have a look at the DryCASE. Unlike most cases, this is a clear waterproof bag that's vacuum-sealed. You use the hand-pump to remove all the air from the bag, and the tight seal keeps it dry even when underwater. It's completely usable inside the bag, and comes with a neoprene armband so you can grab hold of the DryCASE while doing water sports.

The case doesn't offer much physical protection, but it's easy to use and keeps your iPad safe from sand and water.

Price: £50

For: "any tablet or E-reader"

Ballistic Tough for iPad Pro: Sturdy protection for the iPad Pro

There aren't many sturdy cases available for the iPad Pro (we guess most people don't want to take such a big and expensive iPad out on an adventure). The Ballistic Tough for iPad Pro is one robust exception.

It has "raised lips" that protrude from the screen and out of the corners, protecting it from any damage. A built-in stand enables you to keep the iPad Pro upright.

Otterbox Defender: Stylish protection for the iPad

We like the Otterbox Defender as it's one of the few iPad cases that manages to be truly protective while offering a sense of style. It's just a bit better-looking than many of the military offerings around.

Cut-out areas expose the Home button, cameras and sensors (as well as the Apple logo on the rear), helping the Ottberbox Defender look more Apple-esque than other protective iPad cases. It's still rugged, though, with dual-layer cushions and three layers of protection. It also covers the ports and a shield stand covers the screen (or props up the iPad).

aXtion Bold: Thin and protective iPad case

The JoyFactory aXtion Bold cases offer a combination of thin design with sturdy protection for the iPad.

At just 1/2in thick the case isn't much thicker than the iPad (and certainly a lot thinner than other cases). But it still manages to meet the MIL-STD-810 standard, so it can be used in the US Department of Defense.

Trident Aegis: Vibrant protection for your iPad

Trident's Aegis is a standout protective case, in more ways than one. It comes in two parts, a silicon layer for the inside and a plastic clip-on exterior. The exterior comes in a range of colours, including neon green. Fortunately a more respectable black is available.

The silicon layer protects the ports and speakers, and offers some protection - but the case offers more. The great thing is that you can quickly remove it, to lighten up the iPad.

It's also a good deal cheaper than other rugged cases.

Urban Armor Gear Folio: Stylish protection

The Urban Armour Gear is a great-looking iPad Pro protective case made from lightweight material (called "frogskin" by UAG). It protects the iPad Pro against knocks and scratches, and makes it much easier to hold. It's also a lot lighter than other iPad Pro cases, so it doesn't add too much to the iPad Pro's weight. It's even got a nifty clip for the Apple Pencil.

There are nice versions of the case for the iPad Air and mini ranges, too.

Hard Candy ShockDrop Rugged Case

Hard Candy is another iPad case maker capable of blending serious protection with style.

We like the way the ShockDrop range combines a polycarbonate inside, with a ridged silicon skin to protect the iPad Air 2 from drops and knocks. The design offers a lot of grip, so it's easy to hold, and the case protects all the ports. It even has additional protection around the camera.

Rokform Mountable Case: stick your iPad to a metal surface

The Rokform Mountable Case for iPad is nothing if not unique. This case enables you to mount your iPad to a metal surface thanks to its powerful magnets (these do not interfere with the iPad). It also comes with an additional suction mount for non-metal surfaces.
