Apple iPhone 6 Plus

Apple has gone to great lengths to present its debut phablet as a top-of-the-line beast of a machine, with enough processing horsepower to shame HAL 9000 and a large enough screen to put your local multiplex out of business. However, the iPhone 6 Plus is a relative latecomer to this particular race, and it’s got some substantial competition.

HTC Desire 820

The HTC Desire 820 is a piece of kit that is aimed solidly at the mid-range of smartphone buying, with a fairly chunky storage capacity and a 64-bit processor to accommodate the upcoming Android L update. It’s not as fancy looking as some of the more expensive ones on the market, but the comparatively low price means it will be stiff competition.

Display:
•    5.5-inch
•    720x1280 pixels
•    267.02ppi
Features & Spec:
•    First 64-bit Android phone (a year after Apple introduced the 64-bit iPhone 5s and it won’t be supported until the release of Android L)
•    13MP rear camera (as previously)
•    8MP front-facing camera
•    16GB storage capacity (expandable to 128GB via SD Card)
Price:
•    320 Euros (Around £300)
Availability:
•    End of September (projected)

Microsoft/Nokia Lumia 830

Like the Xperia Z3, the Lumia 830 features the ability to record high-definition 4K video. The fairly impressive camera specs also feature dynamic flash that combines flash and non-flash photos for the best effect. Incorporating a maximum of 128GB in expandable storage, wireless charging and a sub-£300 price tag, this will be a tough act to beat for Apple.

Display:
•    5-inch
•    720x1280 pixels
•    293.72ppi
Features & Spec:
•    10MP rear facing camera
•    Take 4K video just by just holding down the shutter button
•    Windows Phone quick camera means photos can be taken quickly – though not as quick as Burst Mode on other phones
•    Can capture images from the 4K video using a burst feature that quickly takes three pictures
•    Dynamic flash takes two images, one with flash and one without, and them combines them
•    16GB storage (expandable to 128GB via SD card)
•    15GB Microsoft OneDrive cloud storage so you can upload photos to the cloud
•    Offers wireless charging via new charging plate available in bright colours
Price:
•    330 Euros (£260)
Availability:
•    September

Samsung Galaxy Note 4

Boasting a colossal 5.7-inch screen, Quad HD and a Super AMOLED display, the Galaxy Note 4 is Samsung’s big kahuna. The price and availability are yet to be released, but best guesses put the final number at around £550, so while it’s still cheaper than the iPhone 6 Plus, it’s definitely on the upper end of the price range.

Display:
•    5.7-inch, Quad HD Super AMOLED display
•    2560x1440 pixels
•    524ppi
Features & Spec:
•    Works with Samsung S Health software

Samsung Galaxy Note Edge

The companion to Samsung’s flagship phablet, the Galaxy Note Edge’s main unique selling point is its screen, which is curved on one side to accommodate notifications and touch controls. Other than this admittedly novel feature though, the Note Edge is to all intents and purposes the exact same phone as its big brother.

Design:
•    Features a curved screen on one side for notifications and controls.
Display:
•    5.6-inch, Quad HD Super AMOLED display
•    1600x2560 pixels
•    515ppi
Features & Spec:
•    Same camera, processor, and display quality as Note 4
Price:
•    £650 (projected)
