Keeping your iPhone dry with a waterproof case

A good case is essential if you want to keep your iPhone safe, but while most cases keep your iPhone drop and shockproof, they do little to prevent water damage.

This is where a waterproof iPhone case steps in. With a waterproof case you can keep your phone safe from splashes, and even take it into the pool or sea. If you want to take your iPad too, we've also rounded up the best rugged and waterproof iPad cases.

Bear in mind that most of these cases are designed for the iPhone 6/6s and 6/6s Plus - there aren't many for the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. Why? Well, those are waterproof out of the box.

Still, they only boast IP67 protection, meaning they're safe for up to 30 minutes at a depth of 1 metre, so there are still a few iPhone 7 cases out there offering the tougher IP68 protection, and we have a few in this list.

Optrix by Body Glove Waterproof Action Camera Case

The Optrix waterproof case for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s is slightly different to the rest of the cases in our roundup, as it looks to transform your iPhone into an action camera. The case is waterproof down to around 33ft and will protect your phone from 6.1m (20ft) drops, making it pretty durable.

The case also features two interchangeable lenses to improve the (already amazing) iPhone camera; a 0-degree low profile lens for general photography, and a 165-degree wide-angle lens for capturing all the action.

The Optrix also features a ‘protective touchscreen membrane’, which the company says will provide you with touchscreen functionality without compromising on protection.

There are cases available for the iPhone SE, 5, 5s, 6, and 6s, but not the iPhone 7 or any of the Plus models.

LifeProof Fre Case for iPhone

LifeProof's case is one of the few waterproof cases with iPhone 7 and 7 Plus versions - though it's also available for iPhone 5 onwards.

It offers protection above and beyond the waterproofing built into the iPhone 7, with an IP68 rating that means it can be submerged up to 6.6ft for 2 hours.

It's also dirt, snow, and dropproof, and comes in a variety of different colours, so you're not stuck with boring old black.

Levin waterproof case

The Levin waterproof case for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s is, according to the company, the ideal case for use when surfing, swimming and snorkelling, as the case is waterproof up to 6.6ft underwater.

It’s also dust, shock, snow and dirtproof, which should provide an adequate amount of protection in a variety of situations. The Levin case also features a kickstand, which allows you to use your iPhone hands-free.

Microphone and speaker vents are all fully waterproof, while still being able to pick up audio. It’s easy to set up too – it comes in two pieces and all you have to do is place your iPhone in the middle, then snap the two pieces together.

Mophie juice pack H2PRO for iPhone 6 and 6s

Mophie is famed for its excellent quality battery cases for iPhones. Generally considered the gold-standard in power accessories, the company has expanded its juice pack range to the iPhone 6 and 6s, even producing this waterproof version.

Your encased iPhone will survive water immersion up to 1.2m for 30 minutes. It's a tad pricey, but if you're after extra power and full on waterproofing, it's definitely worth considering.

Favolcano Waterpoof iPhone Case

The Favolcano waterproof case for the iPhone 6/6s and 6/6s Plus is a good option for those that want protection without breaking the bank. The case should be able to survive being submerged in up to 13ft of water, and being dropped from around 13ft, as well as being completely dust, dirt and snow proof.

This makes it a perfect companion for those of us that are always damaging our iPhones, and though it can’t be submerged as deep as other cases in our roundup, it should definitely survive a drop in the bath or swimming pool.

Bessmate Waterproof iPhone Case

The Bessmate waterproof case for iPhone 6/6s is fully sealed, and offers IP68 standard protection for your phone for protection against water, snow, dirt and shock. The case allows you to submerge your iPhone over 6.6ft in water, and along with being able to protect your iPhone from drops up to 6.6ft, the Bessmate case should protect your iPhone in a number of situations.

Unlike other cases, the Bessmate features ‘near-perfect’ cutouts for easy access to all functions, including the volume button, charging and headphone ports and the home button.

The case features a front cover with a built-in screen protector that, the company claims, doesn’t affect the touchscreen sensitivity. It also boasts non-permeable membrane covers for the microphone and speaker vents from which sound can be heard and captured but without letting in any moisture.

Vansky waterproof dry bag

The Vansky waterproof dry bag isn’t a fitted case, but is instead a waterproof bag that should fit most smartphones (up to 6in), or possibly even a digital camera. The case will protect your iPhone submerged to around 30 meters while still maintaining full touchscreen functionality, making it an ideal companion for diving.

It’s also made from eco-friendly TPU that the company claims is more durable and flexible than standard PVC, and also should degrade in soil in only 5 years (compared to 500-1,000 years with PVC bags).

It also comes with a lanyard to secure the bag around your neck – because the last thing you want is your iPhone drifting down to the seabed!

Catalyst Case for iPhone

The Catalyst case is another one that's available for the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, though you can also grab it for older models.

Like most of the cases on this list, it offers IP68 protection, but Catalyst claims that its case goes even beyond that, and that it can keep phones safe up to 33ft (10m) deep.

It should also survive drops up to 6.6ft (2m), and is safe against dust, dirt, and snow. It even comes with detachable wrist lanyard to help avoid those drops in the first place.

You can find the Catalyst case on Amazon, but you can usually get a better price directly from Catalyst, especially if you're buying from the UK.

Eco-Fused Universal Waterproof Case

The Eco-Fused waterproof bag should fit all the base iPhone models, though the Plus models would be a tight fit. While it offers no real protection against shock or impact, it is very well sealed against water.

It claims protection up to 100 feet, and comes with a strap so it's good for carrying around a pool or beach, and we think it's good value at the price.
