The MacBook Pro is still undoubtedly one of the finest portable laptops ever made. Now nearly as slim and convenient to carry as its lesser-powered cousin Air, it will be prone to scuffs and dinks as it follows you around thanks to its portability. Check our the 9 best cases for the MacBook Air.

Most of the cases and bags we round up here are most suited to the MacBook Pros with Retina displays. That is, all those Pros of recent years without a disk drive, however some are suitable for all, so be sure to check before buying. We’ve included some for 13 and some for 15-inch variations of Apple’s sleek machine.

Mujjo Sleeve for Macbook Pro

Users adore their new MacBook Pro laptops and take them everywhere with them so it’s important that it’s protected from scratches and that the sleeve looks good. The Mujjo sleeve achieves both objectives.

The sleeve provides a snug fit for the 15-inch MacBook Pro and is handmade from a lightweight, soft and luxurious water-repellent felt that is complimented by a stylish full-grain, vegetable-tanned leather flap that securely fastens with a single alloy popper.

Inside the Mujjo there are two large compartments, one that securely holds your MacBook Pro and another that would allow you to store additional items such as documents, smartphone or a tablet. Mujjo has also stitched a small additional credit card sized pocket into the main compartment that could be used to hold business cards or slim storage devices.

The sleeve has an understated, contemporary design that is perfect for both business and personal use. Above all the Mujjo is light, well made and looks and feels like a premium accessory that will perfectly compliment your MacBook Pro.

Priced from €62.90/£60/US$75 (buy direct from Mujjo.com) the Mujjo isn’t cheap but it is a fantastic sleeve. It’s lightweight, feels well made and looks great. Above all, it provides the padding you need to keep your MacBook Pro safe and a water-repellent treatment that allows you to use it in all conditions.

We tested the black sleeve, using the latest 15-inch MacBook Pro (it is also compatible with the third-generation model) and it is also available for 12-inch and 13-inch MacBook devices in both black and tan.

These cases from Speck are great, as they protect your MacBook Pro while allowing for normal use of all its functions and ports, as well as being able to open and close it. It’s available in several colours.

The form fitting case snaps on snugly and fits flush, and also has non-slip rubber feet (just like the MacBook itself) so it wont go sliding around on a flat surface – perfect for long typing sessions. Twelve South BookBook

RRP £79.99

Get it from Amazon for 15 inch MacBook Pro

The BookBook series from Twelve South makes cases for the iPhone and iPad as well as the MacBook, so you can leather bind all your Apple gadgets should you wish. It makes the MacBook slightly bulky, but if you love the look then chances are you won’t mind.

There’s also the argument that if you’re carrying around what people think is an old dusty tome in public then you’re less vulnerable to theft, which is perhaps true. What’s harder to accept is the high price, but if you want to protect your laptop with a hint of nostalgia for non-digital times, this is a good bet.

Woolnut leather sleeve for MacBook Pro

Woolnut is a great little company from Sweden that makes top quality leather goods for several models of MacBook. This fine black number will fit the Retina MacBook Pro models of 2013-2015 (the first models without an optical drive).

The fit is snug as you'd hope for and will no doubt weather the years well - provided your MacBook lasts that long. The leather is a lovely grain and the stitch detailing is subtle. The felt lining inside rounds off a top product.

Booq Saddle Pro

RRP: £250; US$295
Get it from Amazon for £250.

In the US buy direct from Booq.

Maker of superior laptop bags Booq addresses the painful issue of over-packed bags with its latest Saddle Pro – a super-expandable laptop briefcase that is built for the well-equipped traveller. At £250 (US$295) it’s not cheap, but then this laptop bag is built for serious business.

The Saddle Pro oozes quality of design and engineering, and gives you that extra bit of  storage when you need it most.

The Booq Saddle Pro is compatible with 12in to 16.4in laptops, with plenty of storage capacity left for a tablet, smartphone, books, folders and water bottles (via neat zipped mesh side pockets). If you frequently carry around lots of documents and magazines you’ll love the easy-access compartment at the back. There are plenty of handy zipped pockets inside, too.

The Pro’s expandable zip adds another 3.5 litres of storage capacity, which won’t test those YKK zips too much. The only problem will be angry looks as you squeeze the bag into the overhead compartment on boarding the plane.

Whatever you cram into it the Saddle Pro is lightweight in itself, and feels extremely durable with its ballistic nylon exterior. It boasts oversized and rubberized zips for easy access to the pockets and compartments.

The leather handles give it a sense of luxury, and there’s also a detachable, comfortable shoulder strap. When you’re travelling with a suitcase the Saddle Pro easily riots most luggage trolley handles.

The 15-inch version we have here is a slightly different design, and is priced higher thanks to the materials used and protection offered. Well worth a look.
