Hi

I'm looking to manipulate some backing tracks that i sing to, basically to level and EQ nothing else. When with windows i used Nero, now being on a Mac I'm not sure what app to use? any suggestions.

Your best bet is Audacity because it's free. You can also try TwistedWave although it's paid you can download a 30 day demo.

GarageBand will do all that you describe and a lot more too. Best of all, it should be already installed on your Mac and integrates well with iTunes.

Just open a blank Garageband document, drag your music file to the track and start applying those effects. There are a lot of extra custom effects available too if you dig a little deeper.

You could also try loading just the backing tracks into GarageBand and then adding your vocal track within GarageBand. You will then be able to treat the backing track in a different way to your vocal. Typically you might like to use compression, reverb and equalisation on the vocal, together with riding the gain, while the backing track should only need minimal tweaking.

If you're looking to adjust levels, EQ and nothing else. A safe bet is Audacity, since it's completely fre, open-source and generally just solid audio editing software
