Hi...

I've just received my new iMac 20" 10.3 etc and need to speed up my internet access ! At the moment i'm just on a normal dail-up service but that just toooo slooooow..
I've checked with BT and i live more than 6km away from my nearest telephone exchange, so i can't have BT Broadband.
Tiscali dont support the Mac...

So can anyone please help with ideas on equipment & costs and what i need to do to speed things up ? (Apart from moving house closer to an exchange !!!)

thanks very much

Mozmagic,

Tiscali will resell BT services so the same limit will apply. I presume you are not in a cable area so the only options are Satelite which is expensive or ISDN.

ISDN has been superceded by ADSL but it not bad. It connects almost instantly offers reasonable throughput. If you go with BT you can upgrade to ADSL when they get longer reach technology.

You can get BT anytime so you get flat rate access for £14.99 a month.

You can also get routers to share your connection, they are not so popular now but Draytek do some good ones www.draytek.co.uk. Some models will do broadband too so again you can re-use the equipment if you eventually get broadband.

Hope this helps
Chris

Mozmagic,

Although not available right now, & looking more limited than broadband, you could try taking a look at this company who are offering a compression over dial-up (or anything else for that matter) method. Unfortunately, they do say "By April next year we expect to bring out software for MAC OS X", but add that you can e-mail them to express interest & get updates.
