I am trying to import into DVD studio pro from FCP and then encode the disc. With no chapter markers on the final quick time file all works well. However on other jobs when I need chapters to be marked, when I hit the build icon the encoding asset bar sits and gets stuck on 14%.

Any one else come up against this?

TympaniProducti,

Try encoding to mpeg-2 before you import into dvdsp. I've never had the problem you're describing but many have and it seems it's cause you are bringing in QT movies.

Encode your audio to AC-3 too.

Hi there

I've been DVD authoring all week and had problems getting the disc to format. And the files were converted to MPG-2 prior to authoring the disc.

The way I got around the problem was to choose the Build and Format option in Advanced Mode - and build the project to hard disc as a disc image rather than record it to DVD.

Once this was done I mounted the image using Toast and then burnt the disc as a DVD using Toast. Magic - it worked.

Hope this one helps you out Tim.

RickYoung,

I wouldn't do that unless you have total control over where the disc will play.

In dvdsp 2 if you build to the HD(or .img) the RCM(regional code mask) in the VGM(video manager) will be flagged wrong. This can cause problems with some players as it's against the spec. You'll need to fix it with tfdvdedit or ifoedit if you go that way. Also delete the .LAY and .layout files from the VIDEO_TS folder if you use toast.

JakeRussell,

Hi there.

I used the method I described because nothing else would work. There are times when DVD SP just wont write to disc and this is the only solution I found that would work.

I'd sure like to know more about the details you mentioned.

BTW check your PM's. Contacted you the other day.

Rick

Thanks chaps.

If I do as Jake suggests, can I import markers already put in through FCP or do I have to re do them. I find marking chapters more acurate in FCP. Also do you know if there is an upgrade to DVD version 3 or do we have to stump up the full price?

One more question. I am thinking of buying a lap top mac to allow me to work elsewhere on projects. What laptops do you guys use?

Hi Guys,

Yep there is an upgrade to V3.

Yeah you can keep the markers but only if you use an encoder that supports it. QT or Compressor, BitVice maybe when the Pro version comes out but who knows! (Yes you can do it in iMovie or FCPro but I'm talking about importing m2v files at the moment ) You can also import them as a plaintext file (.txt) but they will snap to the nearest I-frame which you don't want it seems.

I use a 15inch PB but only only for running TFDVDEdit and Fusion dvd wise really, not dvdsp 2. Of course I've got graphics packages and web apps etc on there and don't use it for any software encoding at all. I used a dual 867 G4 for dvdsp 2 work.

Jake
P.S I emailed you Rick but I can PM you if you'd like. Sorry for the delay I've been writing articles and things post NAB!
