I just cannot capture into FCP HD. I had the same problem in my old version - but the problem has come across when I upgraded to HD. When I capture the window hangs - spinning beachbal of death and a restart is required.
I am curently doing a workaround by capturing into express, which works fine, then opening the files in FCP, so clealy it's not a camera type problem (cannon 400i).
I have tried throwing FCP in the bin and reinstalling, and using a completely new project but it immediately hangs when I try and capture. My thoughts were that the capture engine might be seperate and is not being updated when I reinstall, and has been left 'damaged' from my previous version - but I don't know how to get rid of it! It's a pity there is no uninstaller on the disc. Oh and I have thrown away all the preferences, that is the com.apple.finalcutpro.plist and the finalcutpro POA Cache File and the Final Cut Pro User data file.

Any ideas as I am pulling my hair out and just want to throw the computer out of the window.

lynndaley, you have made some very basic mistakes I suspect, sorry not being rude. There is no seperate engine, you have somehow got the Capture set-up wrong BUT since you have thrown rather a lot away, I'm afraid that you really must do a complete and very clean re-install. FCP-HD is very fussy, more so than FCE because it is making sure that you have 100% accurate T/C all the time. Chucking Prefs is a waste of time, you must first fully understand what is happening for you, what you are trying to do, that may be contradicting your Prefs and Capture settings.
My advice is go to LAFCPUG and look into the Tutorials section, download the Troubleshooting Capture doc and any others that sound pertinent. Be slow and careful with what you learn there.
Oh, and make sure you haven't got Norton active (file saver OR anti virus) and NEVER go on the Net when FCP is open.
