The Jack OS X team (Stephane Letz, Johnny Petrantoni, and Dan Nigrin)
is happy to announce the release of a new version of Jack OS X, a Mac
OS X implementation of the Jack Audio Connection Kit (Jack). Jack is
a low-latency audio server, that connects any number of different
applications to a single hardware audio device; it also allows
applications to send and receive audio to and from each other. Jack
is different from other audio server efforts in that it has been
designed from the ground up to be suitable for professional audio
work. It focuses on two key areas: synchronous execution of all
clients, and low latency operation.

This new version includes several improvements and new features:

* New, more CPU-efficient CoreAudio driver

* New NetJack UDP module for JackPilot, to allow for Jack audio
connections over a network (including Ethernet, Airport, IP over
Firewire)

* Workaround for "the iTunes problem", in which some applications
(like iTunes) are dropped from the Connections Manager window when
they stop actively sending audio, thus destroying any connections
already established with that application. The workaround restores
the connection state of the application in question when the audio
stream is resumed

* Various Jack Audio Router (JAR) bug fixes

* New Jack VST and AU plugin design; AU plugin now passes current
Apple AU validation test

* Developer toolset added, which allows for both "Apple" and "Unix"
approaches to developing Jack native applications on Mac OS X

* Inclusion of step-by-step illustrated examples in documentation

* Italian and French localization of JackPilot

* Best of all - Jack OS X continues to be free and open source!

JonnyEvans,

The Jack sounds great - but can it dance?

JonnyEvans,

Can you explain the difference between Jack, ReWire and the Audio Hijack tools?

I have used Audio Hijack to allow me to say a Real Audio stream to a AIFF file. And I barely understand the use of ReWire but how do these all fit together?

Thanks
Vince

vsmith1,
Hiya, Jack effectively lets you feed audio from one application to another, so it's not about capturing music, but creating music.
