AlanAudio,

"It's always amusing to recall Steve Ballmer ( CEO of Microsoft ) speaking about the iPhone when it was announced"

Yes he really is quite the visionary, isn't he!

another insight into how bright he is;

"My children - in many dimensions they're as poorly behaved as many other children, but at least on this dimension I've got my kids brainwashed: You don't use Google, and you don't use an iPod." [money.cnn.com]

Hopefully he and his kids reside in 3 dimensions like the rest of us, but it makes him sound seriously messed up if he's letting business rivalries affect how he deals with his family

I'd feel sorry for him if he wasn't so bleedin' rich

re the web use statistics - yes, I too was surprised that iPhone already overtaken CE - good that it is being noted

nom,

"but it makes him sound seriously messed up if he's letting business rivalries affect how he deals with his family"

In my experience this isn't unusual in senior management. I've known managers who wouldn't allow their families to use rival products. Then they change jobs - sorry make a career progression - and throw out all their old employer's stuff - and with a retailer that meant all their clothes, lights, kitchenware, etc. and then replace it with a spending spree.

I've found that many senior managers, and even more so company directors, are seriously messed up.

(Bitter and twisted - what me?)

AlanAudio,

That's encouraging to see, but it doesn't really surprise me all that much. I've had an Internet -ready mobile on 3 for quite a while now (my current model with QWERTY keyboard, over 12 months). In the couple of months I've had my iPod touch (which can only browse via WiFi of course), I've probably spent more web-browsing time by several magnitudes than all my previous mobile use put together.

That's what makes the iPhone/Touch so revolutionary IMO - we'l see a lot more of this in future...

Cynic,

Yes i was, for a moment, tempted to go for a football analogy where the best club managers tend to be a bit 'eccentric'

whereas Ballmer seems to have combined a degree of looniness with not being particularly good at predicting market trends

as long as he's at the helm at MS, I can't see the truly innovative companies having to fear being beaten to the punch by the Redmond heavyweight (sorry, I've gone into sports-writing mode and can't switch-off)

nom,
Finally took the plunge on Monday. What a super piece of kit it is.
Setting it up was simplicity itself and it goes without saying that it integrates seamlessly with the rest of my Apple kit. I've surprised myself in how quickly I've adapted to the Qwerty keypad as opposed to the "press once for A, twice for B etc." keypad of a conventional mobile phone. Battery life isn't that great at the moment but as I've been using it an awful lot to try out all the features that doesn't surprise me. Once things calm down and I begin to use it normaly then I'll get a better idea of how the battery performs.
All in all I'm one happy bunny.

BULLEID34081@mac,

neat - I hope you enjoy it - the set up proceedure is such a joy, getting all the needed account info and bookmarks swapped over so smoothly is very neat

things are only going to get better too - we can only imagine what new stuff the device will be capable of in a few months

one tip for typing is that if you notice you've tapped on the wrong virtual key, instead of rushing to lift your finger and hit backspace - keep your finger on the screen and slide along to the key you wanted - it's only when you lift the finger that the key stroke is entered

lots more neat stuff I'll let you discover for yourself

nom,
Thanks for the typing tip. As I'm a long standing member of the "real men don't do instruction manuals" club, I'm having a great deal of fun poking around finding out what can be done with this super piece of kit. As ever with so many Apple products it's well thought out and so intuitive. Blackberry! Who needs 'em?

BULLEID34081@mac,
Congratulations, are you keeping it on contract or jail breaking?

I'm sooooooo tempted.... I'll be interested to know how you get on.

I have the 16gb Touch so could sell that to finance.....

hangman,
Not intending to jail break it, don't really see the point. I'm happy with the contract and the features on offer. Just one small thing I'd change is to add an MMS capability. Just a fun thing but this morning I was out walking the dog and took a picture of him in the snow. Wanted to send it to the other half's mobile phone but couldn't so e-mailed it to my laptop, sent it via bluetooth to my old pay as you go Nokia - kept that for use overseas - and then sent it by MMS to the other half. It's no big deal really as I rearely need the feature but it would be nice to have it available. Otherwise I'm very happy with the iPhone.

BULLEID34081@mac,
I totally agree about the MMS. I would hope that if they do add that feature it would be via a software or firmware update, and not simply an extra new feature on the iphone v2.

defcom,
Thanks. I'd already stumbled across Swirlymms but a) can't find simple installation instructions and b) have found quite a bit of negative feedback so I'm giving it a miss.
