GarageBand is a great software package for messing around with all things musical, but the latest version also offers up the chance of creating your own home made ringtone for your iPhone. Simply put it together inside the application, export the file to iTunes and then add it to your iPhone to give your favourite gadget a truly unique identity. See also: GarageBand 11 review.

You may only have a maximum 40-second timeframe for your tone, but with a little GarageBand magic mixing it’s pretty straightforward to produce an attention-grabbing audio snippet in no time. You’ll never need to buy a ringtone again.

1. Find some music
Launch GarageBand and then click on the Media Browser button in the bottom right hand corner of the main interface to bring up your iTunes library.

2. Select a song
The Media Browser allows you to view your iTunes music collection, from whole albums at the top to track listings below that.

3. Ready to go
Select a song that you want to sample and drag and drop it into the main timeline of the GarageBand application, ready for editing.

4. All in the timing
Click the Up/Down arrows on the LED screen at the bottom until you get to ‘Time’ so you can see exact timing increments – your ringtone has to be less than 40 seconds to work.

5. Sample a segment
Switch on the cycle region button too. This allows you to define a region in the timeline that you’ll export as the ringtone.

6. Check the length
Drag the yellow marker in the timeline along the segment of track that you want to use. The duration is shown in the LED window.

7. Export your clip
Once you’re happy with your ringtone, with a maximum region of 40 seconds selected using the yellow strip, go to the ‘Share’ menu and select the ‘Send Ringtone to iTunes’ option.

8. Ready to play
The export process duly opens iTunes and your new ringtone will be displayed in a ‘Ringtones’ playlist on the left-hand panel – ready for syncing to your iPhone.

9. Sync your iPhone
Connect your iPhone and select the ‘Ringtones’ tab across the top of the iPhone screen. Sync it with iTunes to add the new ringtone. You can add all your ringtones or just ones you select.
