Intro

You’ve probably heard of Find My iPhone, the service that allows you to locate and track your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. With iOS 5, Apple unveiled a slightly more social service based on the same technology: Find My Friends. As you might have gathered from its name, this app lets you see where your friends are – that’s if they have an iPhone and have given you permission to follow them, of course.

It’s a handy service, whether you’d like to keep track of where your family are or meet up with friends in town.

Here, we’ll talk you through the process of setting up and making the most of Apple’s Find My Friends app.

Step 2 of 7: Step 1: Setting up

When you launch Find My Friends for the first time, you’ll be asked to enter your Apple ID and password in order to sign up and start sharing your location. We’re using an iPhone. If you’ve got a Wi-Fi-only iPad, bear in mind that the service requires the internet to provide live locations.

Step 3 of 7: Step 2: Get some friends

Now that you’ve signed up, you’ll be informed that you have no friends. But don’t despair! You can follow friends by tapping Invite Friends (or +). Then simply type an email address or choose a contact from your Contact list. You can now choose to include a message to send to that friend.

Step 4 of 7: Step 3: Locate them

If that friend has signed up for Find My Friends, they will receive a notification. If they accept your offer, they’ll be listed when you tap the All button. You can see where they are, and how many kilometres away their location is. Now, if you tap All Friends, or on the name of a friend, you’ll be taken to a map view.

Step 5 of 7: Step 4: Map it out

If you have several friends and you have tapped All Friends, you’ll see a Google Map which displays every friend currently allowing their location to be tracked, represented by purple pins (you’re the blue pin). If you tap a person’s pin you’ll see their name and location. Tap the ‘i’ if you want to see more info.

Step 6 of 7: Step 5: Other options

If you want to see just one friend on the map, go back to all and tap on the friend you want to find. They will be the only purple pin. You can also invite friends temporarily if you’d prefer they don’t see your location all the time. Tap Temporary, then Invite Friends. Choose a date to stop sharing your location with them.

Step 7 of 7: Step 6: Settings

Tap Me, and you can choose to hide from followers if you no longer want to share your location. You can also label locations for your followers to see. It’s worth noting that when you ask to follow a friend they will have to send a request back in order for them to follow you.
