Why isn’t my friend getting my text messages?

Is your friend not receiving your text messages? Is your iMessage not sending because you don’t have 3G or 4G coverage where you are? In this article we will address the simplest way to send a SMS to a friend and be sure that they will actually receive it.

There could be a few reasons why your friend isn't receiving your messages. Perhaps they have been meddling with their settings and turned of iMessage. If you think that is what’s happened, then ask them to go to Settings > Messages and to check that iMessage is turned on.

Another reason why they may not be receiving your iMessage is if they have recently switched from iPhone to another make of smartphone. If this is the case then they need to unregister from iMessage. You can see how to do that here: How to fix iPhone iMessage problems, but essentially they need to input their mobile number on this webpage, here, and then enter the six-digit confirmation code that is sent to them via SMS.

Or maybe Apple’s servers are down, it has happened in the past and it could happen again. Apple has a massive server farm where banks of servers host iCloud and all the associated services. From time to time there may be a server outage, if that’s the case you should be able to see more information here at Apple’s System Status webpage.

Step 2 of 5: How to send a text message when iMessage isn’t working

In all of those scenarios there is still a way to send a message to your friend – perhaps to say turn on iMessages, or to say that they shouldn’t have bought that Android phone.

Start by composing your message to your friend in the Messages app, then press send, if you are lacking a data connection (no 3G or 4G, no WiFi) your phone will fail to send the iMessage, it will keep trying but you will notice the blue line along the top will never get all the way across.

The solution is to press on the message you are trying to send. When you tap and hold the message bubble you will see the option ‘Send as Text Message’. Select that and the message will go through as a text. You can tell it’s a text message as it will be green rather than blue.

Step 3 of 5: How to send an iMessage to a friend who has switched to Android

What if the iMessage is going through but your friend isn’t getting it because they have switched to Android and not switched off iMessage as discussed above?

Once an iMessage has sent you can’t press on it and select send ‘Send as Text Message’, which is a little annoying in these situations.

Instead you have two choices: you can temporarily turn off iMessage on your phone, or you can force your phone to send as a text message by turning off the data connection on your phone, we’ll explain how below.

Step 4 of 5: How to turn off iMessage on your phone

To turn off iMessage on your iPhone, Go to Settings > Messages and deselect iMessage.

When you turn it back on again you may have to wait a few seconds for activation.

Step 5 of 5: Turn off data to send a text message from an iPhone

If you turn off data on your phone you will be able to send a text message to your friend.

Go to Settings > Cellular (some iPhones will say Mobile) and where it says Cellular Data switch the slider to off.

When you do this any 4G or 3G coverage your phone had will be no more.
