It strikes me, as I type this on my trusty iPad 2 at 38,000 feet, that we’ve come a long way since the days of cynics calling the device a solution in search of a problem. Less productive than a laptop, less portable than a smartphone? Just good for a bit of fun? Not a bit of it. These days the idea of relying on an iPad for work on the go is entirely plausible.

Nonetheless, fun remains the iPad’s strongest suit, from games and eBooks to surfing the internet. Best of all, thanks to its large, sharp screen and processing grunt, there isn’t a better portable device out there for kicking back and relaxing with a movie. The iPhone is no slouch in this department, for that matter, enabling a generation of commuters to catch up on the latest TV from the comfort (or otherwise) of their train seats.

The world of film – not to mention an internet’s worth of catchup TV and web video – is waiting for you. You can also read our comprehensive guide to downloading, converting, streaming and enjoying crystal-clear video on your iOS device.
