Ah, the unconscious mind and the tricks it plays when it thinks we aren’t paying attention. If you’ve ever woken in the morning to find your partner looking at you with a quizzical expression on their face because you spent half the night mumbling to yourself, then wonder no more.
Sleep Talk Recorder turns your iPhone into a tape recorder, but only captures audio when it reaches a certain level, so it will keep the sound of someone speaking but ignore the lulls in between. Recordings can be saved and played back on the iPhone or shared with others via the Sleep Talk website, Twitter or Facebook. And yes, if you’re concerned about snoring, it’ll do a fine job of recording that as well, and over time will help you analyse snoring patterns to see what’s influencing the way you sleep.
Step 1: Start recording
Download Sleep Talk Recorder from the iTunes store and install it. Load the app. If you want to get started straight away, leave all the settings as they are, make sure your iPhone is plugged into the mains and then tap the green ‘person on a bed’ icon in the middle of the screen so it turns red.
Step 2: Change settings
By default, the app will wait for 30 minutes before it turns itself on, ‘listening’ for any sounds louder than the built-in audio threshold, such as someone talking. The app is clever enough to record only those sounds and not the silence in between. To change the activation time or anything else, tap Settings.
Step 3: Checking the results
Once you wake up, tap the bed icon again so it turns green and then select the History button. Sleep Talk Recorder will store as many recordings as the iPhone has space for, though the more you keep, the slower the app gets. Remove unwanted recordings by swiping to the right and choosing Delete.
Step 4: Listening back
Tap a waveform in the list and it’ll open in a detailed window with individual recordings clearly displayed as jagged blue lines. Use your finger to scroll through and as each sound is cued over the Play button, it’ll be highlighted and you can listen to it. Alternatively, tap the ‘star’ button to save/share a sound.
Step 5: Share a recording
Tap Back and then tap the Favorites button. You’ll see the recording is listed here. Tap the Play button to hear it again or tap the name of the recording and follow the prompts to send it to someone as an email attachment or share it via Facebook, Twitter or www.sleeptalkrecorder.com.
Step 6: Listen and vote
Finally, tap the Toplist button and you’ll see a selection of recordings that other Sleep Talk users have made and uploaded. Scroll through the list, play them back or tap one to share it with friends or vote for it. Tap the Funniest and Latest buttons at the top to toggle between the two listings.
