Macworld Masterclass: Old-time video

Record realistic silent movies and more with 8mm Vintage Camera

Step 1: The main screen

Download 8mm from the iTunes store (£1.49) and tap the icon to start. The app works in landscape mode and in the centre of the screen you’ll see what the camera sees. Change the lens by tapping the button at the top right and choose another type of film by rolling your finger left or right over the film canister.


Step 2: Shooting video

Ready to shoot? Just tap the red button to begin and 8mm will start recording. If you want to introduce some realistic camera shakes and a bit of frame slippage action while you’re filming, tap and hold the Jitter button in the middle of the film canister. When you’ve finished, tap the red button again.


Step 3: My reels

By default, 8mm stores your videos in its own space called ‘My Reels’. Open this by tapping the little filmstrip button at the bottom of the screen. Here you’ll see a carousel of the films you’ve shot with 8mm together with some basic information about when they were filmed, the lens and film ‘stock’ used and so on.


Step 4: Viewing and sharing

Play the video by tapping the thumbnail or the play button. Alternatively, tap the share button (bottom right) and you’ll be able to save it out to the camera roll, share it on Facebook or upload it to YouTube. You’ll have to give permission to both services but it’s straightforward.


Step 5: Change settings

From the My Reels screen, tap the cog button to access 8mm’s settings. You can define whether movies are saved to My Reels, the camera roll, or both, alter the aspect ratio from 4:3 to a more cinematic 16:9, turn HD on and off and tell the app to mix live sound with the noise of the projector reel.


Step 6: Edit existing video

You can also apply effects to existing videos. Tap the camera button and from the main screen, tap the Load Video button, open the Camera Roll and select a clip. When it loads into 8mm, press the Record button to play it back. Press Record again to finish. Open My Reels and you’ll find the video with 8mm effects applied.
