Apple has announced its next mobile operating system, iOS 6, which is available as a beta for developers now and will be available to iPad, iPhone and iPod touch owners this Autumn.
The announcement, which was made at the WWDC keynote on Monday, indicates that Apple will launch its sixth-generation iPhone alongside the new operating system in September or October.
RBC analyst Amit Daryanani said: “The next set of catalysts to watch for includes iPhone 5 launch in September/October and possible Apple TV launch in early 2013,” reports Fortune. iOS 6 will enable iPad, iPhone and iPod touch users to make FaceTime calls via 3G, which Darayanani believes “hints at new LTE enabled iPhone by year-end.”
Barclay’s Ben Reitzes said that he was surprised not to see Apple introduce the ability to write apps for Apple TV, but believes that Apple will host “another major event in early September to release the next iPhone and other key hardware products.”
iDownload Blog even suggests that Apple revealed an image of the next iPhone at Monday’s keynote during the Siri demonstration video. The iPhone pictured appears to be taller than the current iPhone models, but we think this could simply be down to the angle of the presentation causing a distortion of the image.
iOS 6 is et to bring more than 200 new features to iOS devices, including an all new Maps app with turn-by-turn navigation and a 3D Flyover feature, enhancements to Siri and the arrival of the voice assistant on the iPad, Facebook integration, shared Photo Streams in iCloud and new apps.
The free software update will be available for the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, the new iPad, iPad 2 and iPod touch. iOS 6 is not compatible with the original iPad or the third-generation iPod touch, however.
