Apple has issued invitations to a special event on 12 September, where the company is likely to unveil its sixth-generation iPhone.

The invite was sent to media on Tuesday, inviting them to an event at San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater on 12 September, the date many had previously predicted would see the arrival of the iPhone 5.

The invite illustration reads “It’s almost here” and shows a huge number 12, for the date, with the number five as its shadow.

Many believed that Apple will ditch the number in the next iPhone’s name as it did with the third-generation iPad, simply naming it the new iPhone. However, the presence of the five in the invitation could suggest that Apple will be naming the device the iPhone 5 after all.

Another suggestion is that Apple will be launching five new products at the event, but others have pointed out that the line “it’s almost here” points to only one product launch.

So, it’s finally official. Who’s excited?
