Schools are choosing to buy iPads over PCs, according to market data.
Needham & Company analyst Charlie Wolf claims that his research shows that PC education shipments in the US fell 13.9% in the June quarter, compared to the same period last year, while Apple has sold a million iPads to the US education market in June, double what it sold in the June quarter last year.
The news supports Apple CEO Tim Cook claims that Apple’s new lower entry-level price for the iPad is paying off, particularly in education markets. During a financial results conference call Cook said: “We’re actually thrilled with the results that we’ve seen”, suggesting that the lower priced entry-level iPad “unlocked some education demand.”
Mac shipments to education fell 0.1%, according to Fortune’s report.

Wolf told investors this is “definitive evidence” that the iPad has been “cannibalizing” PC sales in the US education market, writes Apple Insider.
While PC sales to education are declining, Mac sales to education have “held steady”, according to Wolf.
According to Wolf’s figures, Apple sold 520,000 Macs to education in the quarter. During the same quarter 1.64 million PCs were sold, but this was down from 1.90 million in the same quarter last year.
Apple saw the Mac market increase by 1.9%, while the PC market fell 2.5%, according to Wolf.
Apple saw strong Mac sales in the US business market, according to Wolf’s figures. The company celebrated 56.6% year-over-year growth compared to an 8.8% decline in PC sales.
However, on a worldwide scale Apple saw Mac sales to home users fall 4.6%, while PC shipments to the home rose 1.1% worldwide. Wolf attributes this decline to delays in the Mac upgrade cycle.
Wolf told investors: “Notwithstanding its premium prices compared to the prices of Windows PCs, we expect that the Mac will continue to grow faster than the PC market, propelled by the twin halo effects emanating from the iPhone and iPad.”
